The quoted e-newspaper article was the Transport Minister, I think Albanese saying somethin' about how it's like a cell phone call.

The air gap to me is important enough to not stand so close to them if I'm not using them, and as they age and wear out, there could be leakage from any shielding not working.

Haven't you heard of the ThruVision ones? Millimeter machines go up to THz, not just GHz. Frequencies matter as they are applied to whether it is passing through the body or not. All I care about is that I'm not going to use them if I can opt-out. A 10 second grope up is less harmful than a body scan.

In the end it's all lies, they're hiding facts and not telling the truth, as the liabilities would just be massive in 30 years. Radiation is radiation folks. Just as the tobacco corps paid out, cell phone companies have and will be paying out, now these machine might just when they're bought out by GE, Tata, BlackRock, State Street, Legal & General, etc., etc., I have no doubt about that. Give it a few years.

The frequency is completely irrelevant for the effects of x-ray radiation. Rapiscan machines use x-ray radiation. They cannot be compared as you are trying to do.

The scanners being used in Australia are millimeter wave based scanners. They use non ionising radiation the same type of radiation used in mobile phones. That is why that comparison was made and why the comparison is valid.

As for health effects from mobile phones. Keep dreaming. Name one single mobile phone company that has paid anything. They are classified as being as carcinogenic as talcum powder and a range of other everyday products. Start campaigning against those products and you might have a point. Meanwhile, in Africa, 1 in 10 children die before their 5th birthday due to easily preventable health issues.

Wow, just wow. I'm surprised Tim leitch doesn't have something on chemtrails. So a toxicologist says mobiles are harmful, overturning the investigations of 1000s of other scientists.

I would not call US$30K a payout as the result of a compensation claim. I think it could be more referred to as 'nuisance' money whereby the insurers agree to pay the Plaintiff's medical bills without accepting liability for her alleged injury. This often occurs in Australia where a claim has no likelihood of success and it is cheaper for the insurers to offer to pay medical bills than have the matter dealth with in court when the same outcome would occur. There is no mention in that report that the insurer has admitted liability that her work in a cell phone industry caused or contributed to her alleged injury.

Also, what I can't understand from reading all of the posts in this thread is it is obvious medhead has more knowledge on the subject than most, if not all others, so those lacking in such knowledge should refrain from offering their comments. If you think it is dangerous, produce proof... As they say "time is money" even if waiting at at terminal, so I am all for saving time when going through security.

Have you been through one of these scanners?

I wouldn't say that they are any quicker than walking through a metal detector. In fact, the times I've been through them in the US the scan time was definitely longer than just walking through a metal detector.

I've had several instances of going through the body scanners, then being lined up for a pat down afterwards and, no - no metal inserts or attachments to my body, in case anyone is wondering. Sent on my way each time with no comment or explanation, so no idea why.

Meanwhile feel free to stand right in front of your old microwave ovens (if you're crazy enough to have one) every time you use it & talking on cell phone in a car. Don't come whining to me & the rest of taxpayers for health care money to cut the tumors out.

A few years ago I read a book about a researcher that was hired by the telecoms lobby in D.C. to investigate whether cell phones were hazardous to rats and humans. He found they were, and they covered up the report. Once again the PR spin one.

I see this corruption in every questionable industry, some just keep quiet and keep their job to 'pay their mortgage and put food on the table' others couldn't care less (sociopaths with unethical mindset tend to gravitate to those industries anyways) and others wouldn't know right from wrong even if a unicorn bit them on their cough and showed 'em. Too many people are mindless twits that don't think for themselves, question 'authority' and don't want to rock the boat.

Ditto for cordless phones and walkie talkies with more than 1 Watt. The wireless 'Smart Meters' in Victoria for reading & controlling power meter usage in homes and businesses is something else to watch. See it's not just one body scanner, it's accumulative and adds up, so many people don't even realise.

Anyhow bodyscanners aren't only in Australia, planes do travel to the U.S. from Australia last time I checked

My point is the end result, it doesn't matter if you're driving a $500,000 car down the highway talking on a high SAR (say 1.2W/kg) phone or a pilot that drinks microwave oven boiled coffee, has lots of body scans, talks on cordless phone and uses handheld radios on weekends as a hobby - they're both going to have serious health issues after years of use. You won't be wondering too much how you got it when you've got the most excruciating pains from tumors in your head or organs.

No one has said the scanners are only in Australia! The location is only important in telling us the type of radiation in use. Your continued inability to understand this as well as confusion between ionising and non-ionising radiation allows easy assessment of the credibility of your thoughts on this topic.

My aunt and uncle are travelling in Canada at the moment. My aunt has had a mastectomy and wears a prosthetic breast. When she walked through the first detector at Calgary airport it beeped, so they asked her to step into the body scanner. It only took a couple of seconds and they picked up the breast prosthesis, so then she had to have a proper body pat down. Apparently, it only took a couple of minutes and they used the room with the luggage x-ray machine and asked the two operators to leave while they did the body search.
