Hi there, back again. Dont worry, I do check up on you all every few weeks!

Anyway, have a short notice trip BNE-KUL (yes, for the F1 Grand Prix!! ;)

Any recomendations, tips or do's/dont's that I should be aware of re: flights?

A quick search seems to render my QF/AA memberships useless, and after trying to log into my ANZ Airpoints account (which hasn't been used for a few years) it seems that it no longer exists either.

Maybe BNE-SIN-KUL and sign up for Kris flyer? Do Malaysian have anything worth joining? In the end I may not have much choice anyway at such short notice and a busy/popular/major event happaning.

Cheers

Edit: Wow, thats clever, my "semi colen bracket" smiley turned into a little yellow smiley!

If you're not likely planning any other O/S travel, probably best bet is either fly QF/MH via SIN and credit points to QF or fly direct on Malaysian and join Virgin Blue Velocity Rewards, which they are a partner of.

I'd worry about getting flights that meet your time & money constraints first. Unless either are no object, it will be a challenge. Then if you have options look at which works best.

Good Point, just thought I would quickly ask the question in case I get options.

Forgot about Velocity (already a member), might earn me 1/2 a trip to Sydney for a cheap weekend.

Thanks.

Most of the time (during day/evening AEST) there are at least a couple of knowledgeable AFFers around to quickly answer questions.

QF51 connects with MH610 to KUL for an arrival around 10:30pm. MH613 connects with QF52 for the return trip.

Note that MH flight times to/from BNE vary between the beginning and end of the week.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for the input. It is with the travel agent now, so we will see what flights have some space!

You could of course credit the MH flight to Virgin Blue Velocity. If not you could join MH's Enrich program (will you fly with their partner airlines). It appears you've missed the Enrich Silver offer where, IIRC, they upgraded every 25th person (who joined Enrich online) to their silver status. Currently they offer a 350 point sign up bonus. I would imagine though Velocity would be the best option...

Note that Malaysia Airlines flights to/from Brisbane are now daily, are operated by 747-400s, depart BNE nightly at 23.59pm and operate KUL-SYD-BNE-KUL (MH141/140).

Well the flights are booked.

DJ BNE-SYD next wednesday morning, followed by MH0122 SYD-KUL. Return is MH0141 KUL-BNE via SYD. Will credit the miles to my Velocity account (so far have only flown 1 DJ segment since I joined in Nov 05).

Any tips on flying MH? It is going to be strange flying international without any status or lounge acces - although with only short stop overs in Aus it wont be too bad.

Can I ring/is it worth ringing MH customer service and asking for a forward seat?

Is anyone else going to be flying MH next Wednesday afternoon out of SYD that can get me into the lounge? I'll even get the first beers!

Looking good for op-up, not looking good for getting a vacant seat next door.

Checked up on seatcounter.com to find:

MH 122: F 4, P 9, A 4, C 4, J 9, and all other letters 0!

Looks like I will be rigning up & requesting a forward seat, checking in early (which is easy to do with the initial BNE-SYD DJ flight, assuming they will check me all the way through?) and then smiling nicely to the DJ/MH CSA's!

Update

Signed up for Enrich, no op up (plane completely full, had non status friends flying in J who were upped to F). Credited the points to Enrich, and found out on my return that they are running a triple points promotion for all flights into Malaysia. So after a SYD-KUL-BNE trip in Y I have over 16k points!

Have another trip planned for May, so with another 12k points for the outward flight, will have more than the 25k points needed for the upgrade for the return trip. No that is a good earning ratio - fly 3 legs and upgrade on the 4th!
