I'm mystified as to how paying for baggage over the Y allowance on a subsequent (separately booked) flight is "crazy"?

Considering the price paid for the J booking in the first place.

My issue is just be aware of the luggage limit.

Its very inconsistent and every checkin person allows a different amount,

eg. the LAX attendant allowed us to have 3 bags at 90Kg for 2 people.

FJ to AU stuck to the limit of 60kg

That's more generous than the book.

Baggage Allowances - Fiji Airways Official Site

You're allowed one piece at 30kg from NAN to AU when travelling in J. You also had an extra in LAX (should be 2 @ 30kg).

If you're connecting, there's no problem (and if you're on the same ticket, and have a stopover, in theory your LAX-NAN allowance should stick too).
