Brisbane Airport today unveilled a $45m terminal refurb that will be completed by 2015.

Artists' impressions show a large area of fake grass in the centre of the departures lounge, surrounded by trees, with water features and extensive use of public art. There will also be space for more dining options and retail space.

and note the QF A380 parked at the gate in the background. Perhaps the artist needs to check out QF's route plans ;).

But overall it looks bright and fresh, as you would expect from an "artist's impression". However, I doubt it will actually look quite like that. The area under the glass below the check-in area is where the duty-free shops are today. I can't seem they giving up the prime realestate just outside immigration. Unless, of course, they have plans to move security/immigration processing and create a rabbit-warren funnel through the Df shops before you hit this remodeled departures area??

How about they spend some of the $45m on the immigration / security screening area? To me that is the biggest area that needs "fixing".

Not more shops or restaurants.

I also noted the QF A380. The EK A380 would be more appropriate.

A good clean would be a good start and wouldn't cost anywhere near as much. The dust on the framework, and the roof of the Coffee Club, visible from the lounge upstairs is appalling.

Agree about the customs/immigration area - I thought the SYD one was a deep dark hole, that place is worse.

The trees in the middle look fine but get rid of them at the gate (the ones of the left of the image). People do actually like looking at the planes you know.

Never mind expanding the terminal how about another Runway :D No point having big fancy terminals if there is not enough real estate for the aircraft to land on !!!!!!!

Do you mean another runway in addition to the current two and work being done on a third?

I was under the impression that the third hadnt started yet hence all the issues in and out of Brisbane?

Its started, the loss of the shorter runway earlier this year for a while was part of the construction works while work itself commenced Aug 2012.

Those trees along the side need to go!

Someone reported me to the AFP for plane watching/photographing in July 2012 while I was in the terminal. The officer was nice enough & when I came back clean, he told me a good couple of spots in the terminal to get shots from.

With the 20% passenger annual growth rates & similar revenue & considering the 20 million* passengers p.a (BAC referenced) this project should have been earmarked & completed years ago.

Agreed about the existing state of the international terminal as well.
Dirty, dusty, rubbish around, the trolley retrieval contractors need a review & damn shame about the only 2 immigration processing booths open yesterday morning. :-|

Had it not been for the GFC it would be a lot closer to reality, to give BAC some credit, it will be the first new runway built since the airports were privatised across Australia.

In that case I should probably be locked up and have the key thrown away... The number of photos I have of planes sitting at the gate....

As for the plans, this hardly looks revolutionary, throw a few trees around in place of the cafe's and shops. Whilst from the angle the artist has drawn the image from it looks all light and airy, from down on the ground it is hardly what I would call a spacious place...
