BNE - Car on runway - flights placed in holding pattern or diverted!

Surely if you crash through a fence you would realise your mistake & stop there rather than keep driving particularly when it would be obvious you're at an airport.

I think you'll find that this was not a mere driving mishap unfortunately. The individual concerned was in an altered and troubled state of mind. As JohnK said, it's very tragic and also quite alarming that a person can be so troubled that they would seek to self harm and put many other lives at risk. Very sad indeed.

I don't complain when someones mental health cause me a delay, I'm just grateful I don't suffer the same thing. Couple of hours of inconveniance for me, a life time for them.

As others have said, sad indeed.

BAC were holding a press conference at noon today regarding the incident.

I'd heard there was more than one individual in the car who made a run for it after the car ran into the ditch between the taxiway & active runway.

I imagine a few Govt agencies will be wanting assurances this kind of thing won't be repeated particularly with the upcoming G20 Summit in November.

Sounds like someone was running late for their flight and had to catch their plane

I'll believe that when it is confirmed that the culprit was suffering from a mental health problem at the time.

Given the location, nature and jurisdiction of the offence, I suppose there is a good chance we will never find out.

Didn't one of the articles mention the person was treated at the scene but not for injuries sustained in the accident?

That would suggest something is not quite right.

That doesn't sufficiently imply that it was a mental health issue. Sure it's a strong implication, but nonetheless.

If there is anything worse than a failure to recognise and acknowledge mental health issues, it's people who make a mockery of them by attempting to pass off their intransigence by illegitimately claiming mental health issues.

I agree with your sentiment re: using mental health issues illegitimately as an excuse.
In this case though the woman in question was certainly suffering from mental health problems, her injuries were a direct result of self harm and she is now being treated in a BNE mental health unit.

You seem to have information (or access thereof) that I could not find (unless all the articles have been updated recently). Fair enough.

That said, surprising how a common vehicle could so easily breach the airport perimeter. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised.

A very big concern given G20 is just around the corner.

Some people, often along with the 'support' of some 'lawyers', pull out the 'mental health card' to 'explain'/justify their actions...which only 'spits in the face' of other people with LEGIT mental health issues

Off my soapbox now

After the brawl at Sydney Airport a couple of years back between two groups of bikie gang members where one got killed (and there were mobile phone photos of the unarmed security guards going the opposite way - don't blame them).

Security really is an illusion.

I was involved with pre-planning for Sydney Olympics and I identified one massive security issue at Sydney Airport - potential for one person to shut the airport down for months - was deemed not in their budget to deal with as it would cost the same to mitigate for the Olympics as to leave it permanently in place and they were barred from making any permanent changes.

The cost - capital cost = $200,000 (possibly 1/3rd less) 4 week Olympic pre/event/post operational cost (labour) approx $50,000.

So Brisbane airport no surprise. A bit like the false confidence about the security if super funds....

But that is society in general today. Me, me, me and screw and everyone else.

Mental illness is one of the most misunderstood diseases out there. I would love to know how you can go to bed happy and one of your first thoughts when you wake up is your world has collapsed around you. Sad indeed.

Quite a bit of activity around that part of the fence today with orange & white mini retaining wall being put up on edge of guttering.

The same kind of scenario you see with roadworks or what separates QLink pax from the airside road & the crossing used when boarding Dash8 flights.
