Thought I'd hit the jackpot when I found plenty of availability in BA F DFW to LHR, but then found out they want ~1200 aud in taxes. Which seems steep I have to say.
And it's a redeye. Is this something that varies with other factors, or is it just that? I did note the J seats attracted the same tax

It's just BA. AA would be much less.

BA love fuel surcharges. As @stryker says look for something flying AA and you will notice a big difference in $. And quite possibly better service...just saying...

I booked BA SYD-SIN-LHR in J recently and the taxes only came to A$568. I also booked BA LHR-JFK (different ticket) and that was £544.

Please change the thread title - it is not "Big taxes", it is"Big fuel surcharges". 🤣

According to ITA matrix there is $29.80 USD of "taxes" and $800 USD in carrier-imposed surcharge (aka fuel surcharge), QFF seems to be missing one of the taxes - XF - of $4.50, but close to what is on ITA matrix.

Also not sure if the AA advice is correct here, transatlantic AA and BA both charge identical surcharges, as part of their joint venture. Whilst I couldn't verify this with F award on DFW-LHR (couldn't find AA F availability), Y awards on both carriers had identical taxes + surcharges of $225 USD.

Don't much care what they call the charge.

I found an AA ticket routing through AUS, no change there - but then I noted the int'l sector operated by BA anyway. Where's good to hub through for AA?

You seem to be confusing real taxes and QF/BA carrier surcharge (= airline profit)
But still money you pay out.
What is the retail fare for the same trip?

DFW is the home base of AA.

Well a Y seat's about 1.4k aud. 9+ for F.

This UK thing is getting out of hand, now they want seven hundred quid in SundryLevies (tm) to get out. Got me wondering if an afternoon or two in Paris might not be pleasant and a ride through the country on the eurostar.

Incidentally, in all of this searching I've not hit a single EK redemption. Has there been a change there?

For award tickets AA and BA don’t charge the same fuel surcharges. My recent AA premium ticket TATL was USD200, compared to BA that wanted USD700 (both issued through QFFF)

Ha - so I chucked in a BA DFW-LHR-CDG for sh!ts and giggles. 200usd less in taxes. I travel light :)

Ok, that must be for premium awards, I only looked at economy awards (couldn't find any premium awards on AA), and the surcharges were identical for both carriers on DFW-LHR.

Also depends on whether you book on the AA website or QF/BA.

Yeah… for simple TATL itineraries BA slugs on the fuel surcharge. If you include BA as part of a oneworld award, or a longer trip that doesn’t originate in USA and end in UK (and maybe Europe too?) the fuel surcharges drop back to the same levels as AA.
