Have you considered Fiji Airways? Their Business class is often en par price-wise with Qantas Premium Eco and on the A350 which serves SYD-NAN-LAX blows both the A330 and 787 on Qantas out of the water- easily.

Much better seats, way better food and attentive service. Plus you get Qantas SCs and points and the transfer in Nadi is quick and the new lounge pleasant enough. Highly recommended!

Looking around at the moment, I could be looking in the wrong places or at the wrong time, but Fiji doesn’t seem to have any major discounts available … it appears Philippines in J is under half the price of Fiji. Looks like it’s coughpier hard-product between Manila & Sydney mind you, but for half the price … I’m sorta/kinda considering booking some J flights early next year, only problem with Philippines is you don’t earn any points of any value … but for that price-difference …

I flew LAX-MEL in Y on the 787 last week.

I'm 6'5 and to be honest, I found the seat pitch pretty decent. I've been doing a bit of flying around Asia lately and there was much better legroom than SQs 777s for example. Even when old mate in front reclined, my knees weren't touching his seat.

Had a spare middle seat, so it felt 'wide' enough to me.

Good luck on the upgrade, I was lucky enough to snare one on the way over, even though lowly bronze like you.

That's a shame with Fiji, I think they've realised they're on to a winner, especially on the A350 route to LA. Shouldn't have praised them so much after our flight in April

Air Philipines I'd be hesitant not so much because of the product but because they're going in and out of administration/ potential bankruptcy all the time if I'm not mistaken. And that's a VERY risky move as the money could suddenly be gone (had that when Malev Hungary went under- luckily was just an inner-European return but in J so still quite painful).

Thanks for the heads-up ... that's probably WHY their cheaper flights still seem available a few weeks after I first looked-up the prices.
