Simple question that I might already have an answer to, but curious to hear opinions.
My $230US Delta flights from JFK-MAD-JFK for next March have been changed by Delta with a difference of over an hour on each leg, which allowed me the opportunity to switch flights.
Great! I thought... One of the options was flying Air France JFK-CDG-MAD on the new Airbus A380 but the web site refused to let me book it online, and since I've flown the Qantas A380 three times already I'm not eager to try out AF offering.
Instead I chose a three step trip consisting of KLM and Air France service by flying JFK-AMS-CDG-MAD
According to Delta I will generate about 9,000 skymiles for this trip, which when added to the 3,700 skymiles I have already earned with Delta (all through promotions without ever setting a foot on a Delta aircraft) would not be enough for even a one way trip within US.
According to Flying Blue I would earn 50% of the actual mileage traveled when booked on Delta "U" booking class ticket. This will roughly yield 3,000 flying blue miles... thanks to a recent Australia-Europe trip I have 11,400 flying blue miles already and can put those 3,000 miles to better use as it will get me at least a one way flight within europe... (which generally even on short 30 flights could cost, and normally do cost between $500-$900US) + about $120US in taxes... (which again is more than an LLC would charge in the first place but isn't available on the route I'm flying)
So what should I do.... stick with SkyMiles or change the booking to my Flying Blue #?
I have until March to decide, but am curious to hear opinions. I'd love for Air France and KLM to extend the current 50% award booking promo where a 20,000 typical intra-european roundtrip costs only 10,000 miles. That would be so cool!
