Hey guys,

Long time lurker but first time poster, getting a bit confused about the best way to use these points/upgrades book flights to Melbourne and back from Perth for me and the missus.

I'm Velocity platinum and have 5 of the complimentary upgrades (4 from plat and still got the bonus 1) plus ~150k points (however I don't really want to waste these points). Due to flight times/work next day etc I'm planning to fly Saver economy there (Perth to Melb) but use the complimentary upgrades on the way back and fly Business (Melb to Perth).

  • As there are still reward seats available for the flight from Perth to Melb I'm after (roughly 17k points plus ~$20 to get there) so I was planning on getting this for the trip there (easily beats the $260 saver fare at the moment)
  • The flight back is where it gets interesting (given I want business for this):
    • It's still about 17k points for "Economy Reward" but I don't think this can get upgraded with the complimentary fare upgrades?
    • Based on a few other threads I read, it looks like you need an "Any seat Flexi" fare to use the complimentary upgrade? (roughly ~44k points)
    • Alternatively I could get a "Business Reward" seat for roughly 34k on the flight there (less points and don't need the upgrade)?

Based on the above, it doesn't really seem to make sense to book an "Any seat" reward does it? Using the rough rule of thumb of $100/10,000 points, I'd almost be better off paying the $399 for a flexi fare and then using the complimentary upgrade for business class?

If my assumptions about Reward Economy seats are wrong and it turns out you can upgrade them with the complimentary upgrades, then I may as well use the fare upgrades to upgrade both ways?
