Agreed there. SYD - KUL on the a330 is woeful in J. But KUL - LHR or CDG on the a380 is pretty good. Well worth the redemption cost for they leg.

iij05 Beta4Me and knightman7 thanks for your input...

I must admit, I was considering economy, to spread the points out well....and angled flat to amsterdam for half the points, for 2 kids (12 and 15) is not a bad option.....They don't need to get used to fully flat....even angled flat is a luxury.......

I reckon Malaysian will be safer than lots of other airlines now.....cannot afford to be otherwise......

Then we have more points to spend and use for other travel.....

BTW, if we were going to go with economy, what would the best option be - best comfort? and then cost in Altitude points?

I agree MH J is worth considering - it's not on a par with SQ but far better than any premium economy I've seen.

IMHO, it would be a waste of your points to redeem for economy seats. I certainly wouldn't do it via KrisFlyer, as you'll still end up paying ~$3k in taxes/surcharges. You could use your points via Altitude Travel and fly for free in economy with whatever airline you like (for probably in the region of 800,000 points).

So if happy to spend on Malaysia, a reasonable way to go for business seats, but if want good business seats, go with Kris but at about twice the price.

Can you please give me an idea of how easy it is to redeem with Velocity, KrisFlyer, Cathay or Malaysia? Suspect Malaysian easy at the moment...

Buying anything directly with Altitude points would earn credits etc but use lots more points it seems...

SQ is generally not bad with most routes - as long as you are reasonably flexible and aren't fixated with flying on the A380. For example, when I booked 4 J award seats from MEL-FRA, there was availability on about half of the flights around my preferred dates. It's easy to find out anyway - sign up for a KrisFlyer account (free to join) and then you can search for award flights, even with a balance of 0 miles.

Velocity - availability generally v good on routes served by VA and/or EY (and again you can search online), but that's not necessarily true of routes served by other partners.

Cathay - no idea, sorry.

Malaysia - availability always excellent, even before MH370.

Thanks for the replies - so basically Malaysian are half the points compared to Singapore Air (different quality product), I guess I take the philosophy that I'll work my way up , many years of flying left in me and the KUL-LHR or CDG is the longer leg too.
