I was looking to book 3 nights at either the Moana Surfrider (or possibly Sheraton Waikiki) for 13-16 May 2012 & was wondering what rate code to use to get the best deal for an ocean view or ocean front room.

SO has an Amex Plat charge card so is eligible for SPG Gold but does not have any points yet to burn. I looked at the cost of buying points but 20K would cost $700.00 so 'cheaper' to pay for the nights.

When I looked at the following rates I hadn't signed in using SO's SPG number because I don't know what it is yet so the rates may be marginally cheaper once I get that.

Moana Surfrider

Ocean View Queen bed

USD325.00 per rm per nt* room only x 3 nts
Historic Wing Heavenly bed
* plus resort fee of USD26.18 pr pn

USD545.00 per rm per nt * x 2 nts (3rd nt free on checkout + bfst for 2)
Historic Wing Heavenly bed
* plus resort fee of USD26.18 pr pn

Ocean Front King bed

USD355.00 per rm per nt* room only x 3 nts
Heavenly bed
* plus resort fee of USD26.18 pr pn

USD590.00 per rm per nt* x 2 nts(3rd nt fre on checkout + bfst for 2)
Heavenly bed
* plus resort fee of USD26.18 pr pn

Does anyone who has stayed here before know if there is a huge difference between an ocean view queen in the historic wing vs an ocean front king not in the historic wing?

From experience have you got the best rate through the SPG website or would the Amex Platinum Travel service have a better deal?

Are there any BOGO offers you know of or if not, what rate codes below to you select when looking at availability?

Thanks in advance. :p

It is slightly cheaper using the Z3R code-queen ocean front-$US410++ for 2 nights,3rd free
Ocean front King-$US460++-same
But no breakfast and this is pre paid and noncancellable.
been 35 years since I stayed there though.
Over the other side of the road is the Princess Kaulani where king partial ocean view is on z3r-$US205 for 2 nights,3rd free-++

Thanks for that Dr Ron!

Always get a bit nervous booking non-cancellable stuff though so might book one of the other rates for now which can be cancelled 72 hours prior for no fee. Then I can still keep an eye out for anything else that comes along.

I was in waikiki last year during the start of May and have just returned today from another 9 days in which I stayed 4 of those days at the Sheraton Waikiki. They are just starting there "spring break" period and you will be very lucky to find any sort of discounts available. The Sheraton Waikiki is a very large hotel ( I think around 1700 rooms ) and during the time I was there (week before spring break starts) they were over 96% occupancy and I would suggest 70-80% was asian occupancy.

Whatever you do, get in now and book it otherwise you will miss out.
My picks:
1. Moana,
2. Outrigger reef
3. Sheraton Waikiki

Well down the list is
Holiday Inn and Hilton

Personally I would try to avoid staying at the Moana Surfrider purely because they charge $$$ for beach chairs. IIRC it's around $30 per seat on the beach, and their it tiers down to $15 by the poolside. Fair enough you are more than likely to secure a seat on the beach but if you were travelling in a family of four, that's $120 per day on top of the premium prices they charge. However I have stayed there three times but fortunately I was upgraded to the one bedroom oceanfront suite in the Tower Building on all occasions. By the way, if I wasn't sitting on my balcony which was on top of the sand, I was sitting on the sand to avoid the seat tax.

If you are still going to stay at the Moana Surfrider, then in reference to ocean view versus ocean front, I personally would choose the ocean front as its more than likely closer the the sand. The ocean view may be rooms which have views of the ocean but can be potentially blocked by those famous Banyan Trees, remember that these are original low-rise buildings that were built in the early 1900's. Or worse, facing sideways with the ocean in the corner of your eyes. Also avoid ocean view rooms in the tower building because 50% of those rooms face the building next door and lack privacy.

I would highly recommend staying at the Royal Hawaiian and a Oceanfront room in the Tower building, using the Z3R rate comes out to $370 per night + taxes + resort fee. That's a pretty neat deal for what appears to be a very busy time in Honolulu and a room in the tower which has panoramic views of Waikiki Beach and beyond.

I know I link my review quite a few times but here it is again;

I had a look at SPG.com and the Sheraton Waikiki is totally full. Also I would not recommend the Sheraton Princess either, it is less than $150 per night for a reason.

Many thanks Eric & Alan for your input. Interesting to note the $30.00 charge for the sun lounges which I wouldn't have known about.

Have booked the Moana Surfrider for the moment which has a 72 hour cancellation policy in case anything else pops up but that's probably unlikely due to being a busy time.

These hotels on absolute beachfront are alot more expensive and have extra charges for a reason. That reason is simply because they can. pay up or stay a street back. As stated I stayed at the Sheraton and they didnt charge for a beach chair, but then again, they dont have an actual beach, but do have 2 beautiful pool areas and the good thing is one of those pools ( the affinity pool ) is restricted to persons over 16, so no noisy kids running and screaming. They do monitor it and do actively police the rule. The Sheraton however charges a "resort charge" of $25 which covers car parking, HSIA, water in your rooms and a couple of other things as well.

At the time I was their ( departed 26th March ) they ( the local council ) were in the process of extending the beach where it had eroded away and were making the beach upto 40 meters wider in varuious places and were going to include the area infront of the moana and the pink hotel but I dont think they were coming as far as the Sheraton. So if they do the small strip in front of the moana and make it 40 meters bigger there will be huge amount of beach and sand.

If you do stay at a spg property you have the option of charging back to your rooms from any of spg's 4 properties ie moana, sheraton, royal hawaiian and 1 other.

Finally, if you go to the 30th floor of the Sheraton during 6am - 10am and 4.00pm - 8.00pm and stand inside the entrance way to the club lounge you will get the most fantastic view of the beach - well worth it
