(I hope this is in the right place)

I'm booking a return flight to LA in March (fly to LA on the 4th, leave LA on the 14th) with QF, and I'm wondering which option is best value. Amongst my family, we have enough points for a Classic Award in Y+ SYD-LAX via MEL and Y LAX-SYD which is 112k pts + whatever tax, fees, etc. The only downside to the award is obviously no SCs/points earnt and no upgrade option. I'm wondering is the award booking is a better option than using points + pay to get the fare down $1120 whilst being able to join the upgrade lottery and earn points + SCs? (This trip will get me the SCs and segments to finally make QFF Silver , which is why I'm not as keen on the award booking)

Thanks for any help :)

Wouldn't classic award work out cheapest?

Using points + pay to earn some SCs and then you would need more points to request for upgrade.

Have you thought about using classic award on outbound sector and paid one-way airfare back for the SCs?
