Best use of qantas FFpoints

Also, if we're talking about the best use of QFF points, then I often book PER-SYD or PER-MEL flights as a cheap Red-eDeal, but first check to see if J awards are possible on the same flight. When the Y booking is confirmed, usually about 1-2 hours to receive the confirmation email, then I jump in immediately and upgrade the flight to J using my points. This changes a $300 flight into a $2000 flight, which IMHO is a very good use of my points.

It might be a good idea to keep reading the other comments (if you haven't already) and maybe ring Qantas and see if you can get some on Japan airlines which don't appear on the Qantas website - they're great to fly with - good luck

Sorry to hijack the thread - but I just have a question related to the release of classic flight rewards, if anyone can help.

My wife (SG) and I (NB) are looking to bag two J reward seats from Sydney to Dublin next April, but it's looking pretty sparse at the moment. We're looking under her account (SG) but it's not showing anything that I can't see in my own lowly bronze account. There is availability in Feb and March, but not April.

We're probably thinking of flying on Emirates metal as that means two flights rather than three (and avoiding Heathrow).

Is it a case of waiting a bit longer due to the new T-310 'rule' which is possibly becoming the norm? Or is that something that just applies to NB members?

Following my own NB advice to now wait until T-310 rather than the old 353 for premium cabins has seen me today snare 4xJ Syd-SFO on QF73 for March 27 2017 a couple of weeks before school hols.
Very happy (fuel charges aside of course)

Wow very impressive cjd600!

Okay so I have been reading up on this thread, thank you to all the contributors btw!, I am going to be attempting to book my wife in J to NY on 29th of May 2017 and wanted to make sure I give myself every chance of getting the flight for her. I am Bronze status.

Her preference is qantas (but I will be looking for Velocity J as well) and she wants to fly direct to the USA and then onto NY, so the simple option of Cathay J is out.

So I should be:

1. Setting up expertflyer alerts from SYD to LAX, DFW, SFO & JFK for the 29th and also a few days either side.
2. Best chance seems to be seats released T-310 days out, between 10pm and 3am Sydney time.
3. Monitor the pattern leading up to that date so I see how they are being released.

Anything else??

cheers

If going to New York without stopping in LA I reckon you shouldn't exclude Cathay. The flights should be available in the next couple of days too!

As PS I'm seeing availability for the route I want in J at T-310.

When are the J seats released for SG and WP?

We flew home from NYC with Cathay in J, great flight and a much better stop in Hong Kong than the nightmare of LA transit and immigration on the way over with Qantas to NYC.

If it was for me I'd be doing Singapore suites via Singapore and Germany or where ever they route through, but the better half traveling with friends and they just want the shortest travel time.

But you can't redeem for SQ Suites - or any SQ flights for that matter - using QF points?

I was pretty happy with my 104k qff points first class one way to Tokyo direct on JAL. Got this in January 2017. Still can't believe I could get it?! Very little award seats Sydney to Tokyo on Qantas anywhere during Japan winter.

I think that's a pretty good value use of points to be honest. It's a day flight too so u get to enjoy being in first instead of sleeping!!

114k?

I completely agree about the daytime flight being a great use of points. Service on my last NRT-SYD flight left a little to be desired, but only by JAL/ANA standards.

.........

Toss up between getting 4 x J>F point upgrades on the same QF11 flight and toasting 1,248,000 points on the family Euro holiday last Xmas.

I did SYD - HKG to Newark 5 weeks ago in J and it was good.
