I am sure I have read it on this forum regarding the best J seats for a couple on the newly reconfigued 747-400's. If memory serves me correct the advise was for downstairs rows 2 & 3 A,B & J,K.

Anyone care to confirm this

Depends what you're after. With the new configuration there's lots of space. If you want 1AB on the boarding pass and a view 'looking forward' where you're going than those are a good choice too (but close to their neighbours). If you've done the whole looking forward thing, then any other seats are fine.

3E&F are pretty good as no-one can see you (they are all in front). Similarly 16 J&K upstairs are effectively on their own as everyone is in front of you and the toilet is at the front.

Given a choice I would opt for the upper deck as it feels more private & I like having the side lockers for storage which make a good resting place for laptops at meal times.

Isn't there side storage with downstairs A / J window seats ?

or only the upper deck window seats?

The 5B / 5J seats definitely have its own storage space from what I gathered here on AFF.

no side storage main deck..EXCEPT 5B/J due to curvature of fuselage a seat 'pair' does not fit..so 'single' seats are given a side module which has stowage/bench space..

3E/F also each have a cupboard in front of them which are reasonably roomy.

They certainly do. I sat in 5B from BNE/LAX return and really enjoyed my seat. Unfortunately the sloppy service and not so great food spoilt it a bit.
