Hi, I'd like to book a trip to London using my Qantas frequent flyer points, preferable in late June this year (if there's any availability). I couldn't do the flight in one go so am looking at a stopover(s). Any suggestions on where to stop over? (I've been to Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong before so would prefer somewhere else). I was thinking maybe Sydney - Dubai (any suggestions on how long to stop over for?), and then maybe to Frankfurt or Paris (only because I THINK the taxes are cheaper rather than flying in to London?), returning from London to New York, then stopping over somewhere (any suggestions?) and then on to Sydney.

Any help much appreciated. I'm on a tight budget.

Thank you.

You can book your proposed flights under what is called a OneWorld Award. There are some minor conditions, however the total cost will be 140,000 Qantas points. You can have up to five stops (that is stoping more than 24 hours) so you could visit Dubai, London, Paris, New York, (Los Angeles) for example and all covered under that award booking. I believe you can have up to 16 sectors too, so you do not exactly need to fly direct .... so let's say you intend to stay in New York and Los Angeles but want to visit San Francisco for the day. You could "build" into it, a New York to San Francisco flight ... create a very long transit there of up to 23h 59m and stay there for the day, then fly onto Los Angeles.

Here is the thread for more information:-

Without getting into too much detail a couple of comments:
- flying INTO London makes no difference to taxes. It's flying out where APD is levied. So best to fly into London and out of somewhere else. Germany also has high taxes for departures. Cheapest tend to be Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland amongst others.
- Dubai is OK, but check the historical weather for the time of year that you are there, and see if the heat is OK for you.

Thank you Alanslegal, I had seen that thread but thought it was old, and now realise I was looking at the first page of it, and not the last. I'm an ID10T! :)

Thank you dajop, I didn't know that about the taxes, and hadn't thought of the heat of Dubai.

In a situation where there is only two months to go Id suggest the best route is any one with availability, am not sure you'll be able to be that fussy! Have you done a dummy booking to look at what options are thrown up?

Yes, just trying to do that now. Very time consuming when you don't really know what you want. :)

Perhaps try bookings to the major ports (without stopover) and see what routes are thrown up. If they are not thrown up as direct flights there is probably less chance they will be with a stopover. This wouldn't be a 100% rule but nevertheless a good starting point.

If you are not finding the flights, one option is to break the flight into 2 segments I.e. Syd sin Lhr and this may give you more options that may not show on a normal search. Usual breaks are SIN, HKG and BKK the second leg will not be on QF and cost more points but at lease they may give you some options. Other less known options might be Shanghai or India or anywhere else QF flys.

An additional option is to call QFf and ask them for available flights. They can assist to book but do charge $60 or 6000 points for the assistance.

I have recently booked an award flight via KUL on Malaysian airlines and BA to LHR. These do not show up on the online award bookings. You can only use these via Qff call centre.

good hunting
