When I lived in South Perth I ate there twice a week.

Best home style Italian in Australia.

When I was in Perth, the Bell Tower Cafe on the Southern bank ferry stop was rather nice. Basic menu and tiny, but nice atmosphere.

The other place I remember which had good food was a restaurant called Halo, on Barrack Street Square.

I am wondering whether we need a restaurant guide for major cities (one city/country per thread) and make them sticky in some subforum.

So people can recommend places for people to go with a rough $ amount pp.

Worth a suggestion to Admin?

Something simple like:

Madam Fang, Melbourne, Fusion, $60 pp + booze - try the quail

Nothing more detailed than that (KISS )

I am not a big fan of restaurants and I honestly have to say that I have been spoiled all my life with my mother's cooking.

- My all time favourite would have to be mum and dad's barbeques with fabulous marinated meats
- Mum's pizza
- Mum's Sunday roasts (chicken, lamb etc)
- Dad's havitzi (a mixture of water, milk and flour (corn is usually the best))
- Most soups

Too many others to list.

As far as eating out there are no memorable experiences although you can never go wrong with seafood.

- Seafood platter
- Lobster mornay
- Oysters mornay or kilpatrick
- Marinated octopus or calamari
- Any prawn dish

Favourite/memorable meals, most of mine are fairly simple:

• A good steak
• White chocolate risotto (home made)
• Glazed donuts from Chuck's 24hr donut shop in Belmont
• Molten-centred Godiva chocolate cake
• Chicken Chilli Cashew from my local Thai
• Fresh bread rolls in Germany for breakfast/dinner

This masterchef obsession has gone too far. The other day, while visiting my mother, who has prepared pretty much meat and three-veg for my Dad for 55 years, said: "Sit down for dinner, I'm plating up some steak on a puddle of mashed sweet potato."

My top 5 meals:
1. Degustation at Becasse (the old one at Surry Hills)
2. Beouf Bourginon and creme brulee in a Parisian bistro (can't remember name or location)
3. Saji (goat and lamb roasted over coals, with onion and minted yoghurt) in Quetta, Pakistan
4. Mum's Chicken (roasted in oven bag)
5. Thai street food

Love a long lunch in summer and a rowdy dinner in winter.....

We will know if she does as we will read about the death of MatF (perhaps by food poisoning)

The whole term "plate up" is getting out of hand. It is one of those terms that very quickly has entered the vernacular.

I still serve food at home and will continue to do so, as I am resisting the growing urge to plate up dinner. I do however find myself wiping the plates of fingerprints and drops of food prior to serving.

I found Queenstown to be excellent for food from cheap right up to 5* dining options.

The use of local produce is exceptional in NZ and they really know what they are doing. Local Wild Boar was my fav when I was there.

I went to Fergburger in ZQN. Great, fresh tasting, wholesome burgers.

There's also a lovely chocolate / sweet shop that serves very decent coffee located not far from the harbour. Goodness help me I can't remember the name of it now, but I do remember that customers could surf the net there, too.
