OK - back on topic (as interesting as the debate on the actual use of technology is).
Best device - I have to say that I couldn't be happier with the iPads (I have owned the first three generations) than I am now - same goes for the iPhone (only had 3gS and 4S). Oh and it has the do not disturb thing built into iOS6 now
Apps - I know they have been covered in part by the travel planning thread but here are some i use generally:
All the basics - I use the apple apps daily/multiple times daily and they do what I need them to - calendar (integrated to Gooogle calendar and to my work calendar), camera, pictures, maps (sort of),
Travel - MyFlights 2 HD, Oz Weather (great for grabbing the radar to see how carp the weather is in MEL), cities (great for planning multi location conference calls), Transit Syd (train times in Sydney), Exchange for quick rough exchange calcs
Skype - over wifi at home I can hand the phone around or pop outside to show my mum what her grandson has been growing
Games - On the phone Temple Run keeps me distracted when I need to be and words with friends, on the iPad Angry Birds fills up some of the time on the aircraft
The most useful though is AirVideo which pulls any format of video off my external HDD (connected to my always running iMac) and plays it either directly on the device (which means if we have a Fireman Sam requirement I don't need to have Fireman Sam on the iPad at all times) or flicks the video to the Apple TV which is connected to my TV.
