We're going to have a long weekend in Berlin in December. I'm seeking recommendation for accommodation, preferably under Eur200. I've stayed in a few different places in Berlin (Circus Hostel, a hostel in Schöneburg, and somewhere random in 97, can't even remember where that was, dodgy as anything!! Mattresses on the floor of an apartment ... )

We're two adults, one 8yo. I'm leaning towards Hampton near KuDamm, or a Holiday Inn Express near Checkpoint Charlie. (Am checking out AirBnB also, but not fussed about self-catering, just wifi and amenities and nearby food, perhaps included brekky).

Any other recommendations? I have Hilton Gold, but no other useful status. Some IHG points and Hyatt points ...

I'd definitely recommend the Adina at Hackescher Markt, we stayed here last year and it's is one of the nicer hotels I've stayed in. Walking distance to plenty of attractions, plenty of public transport outside, the market square itself has numerous of dining options and there is a supermarket around the corner.

FWIW it's ranked #3 on tripadvisor and has rooms for less than $AUD 200 a night

Did you have any issues with wifi, brebbles?
The Adina apartments are looking good (either Hackescher Markt or Checkpoint Charlie), but I'm worried about the wifi comments I've read in some reviews.

Initially yes, but then we worked out that you can pick up WiFi passwords from reception which last either 30 or 60 minutes (can't remember).

This complimentary WiFi was only supposed to be used in the reception area but we found they worked fine in our room. We made a habit of asking for a password slip everytime we came and went via reception and ended up with more than enough.

Last time I actually stayed at the Generator Mitte Hostel with my wife and daughter in a quad room. Was ok with good wifi.

Great location. Underground station virtually next door...and many restaurants nearby...and not that far a walk to many attractions..or jump on the underground. At the time it was cheap and eligible for the 10 MR points per $ booking bonus at hotelclub.com/amex Place wasa bit basic, but for a hostel was very good.

We also booked this as was a cheap taxi ride from the airport, was near our exit point as we were going to catch a train to Heidelberg and as and as our flight arrived late at night AirBnb was not really an option (we use AirBnb sometimes) whereas this had 24HR check-in.

Looking at hotelclub.com/amex you can get a central Berlin hotel for about a $100 a night...while earning 10 Amex Points per $.

My thought is as long as you book some where handy to the underground and with restaurants near your accommodation that it does not matter where you stay as long as it is reasonably central.

Our accommodation varies a lot when we travel as we always go for location over standard (except if we are looking at say a "destination" option like a resort. Particularly in a city like Berlin, when you are out and about all the time as there is so much to see and do.
