These blood suckers are very hard to eradicate and they are prepared to hitchhike to get to better digs.
See the site Bedbugregistry.com to follow your favourite little blood suckers!
There is an article about bed bugs in SMH today.
I don't really like them!

Don't single out America! They are in all sorts of accommodation from 1 star to 5 star on a global basis.

After being in a hotel room with them once, I certainly have changed how stay in hotels!

I came home with welts so it took me a while to figure what had happened.
I now keep my bag up on a baggage stand and not on the floor.
Yes bed bugs do not know the difference between a 5 star and a 1 star hotel. My bites were in a 5 star place so they were the classy bed bugs!

Have read plenty of horror stories from around the world (not just America) but have never come across them myself.

Matt

Yes these bugs are hard to clear out and they are worldwide.
I have stayed at a couple of the hotels that copped a mention but our rooms were ok at the time we stayed.
My most recent encounter was in NZ.

So how do you normally account for or detect bed bugs? Keeping luggage (and items, clothing) off the floor seems to be one point.

I thought they seem to be more common in warmer environments, and in areas of high population density.

My latest bites were in a place in NZ that was pretty cool last month so these little blighters are survivors.
They do seem to love bodies that are in the 37 and 38 degree range.

Just listening to an entomologist being interviewed on ABC RN, London Tube the place not to sit down in the world.

Yeah there was an article a couple of years ago that would make people shudder. Of course it was sponsored by a pest control company....

I'm more worried about food poisoning in the BA lounges then anything a tube seat can throw at me!

I've been lucky so far. Despite doing budget trips across the US and Europe, I've never come across them. Mozzies on the other hand, I'm a pro at being bitten...

Yep. Never put clothes or a bag on carpet or the bed. Avoid using fabric bag stands. Be aware of tiny blood stains around the bed head or on the wall near the bed.
Plenty of sites give tips on what to look out for. They are nasty things though and you almost want to throw away all of your clothes and luggage if you get infested. Bringing them back home is a nightmare.

Planning a trip to NYC next year and that article has made me rather squeamish! Maybe I should wrap us all in glad wrap or something. Hopefully there are no trendy bed bugs at any of the Ws.

According to the Bed Bug Registry (by no means authoritative - it's like TripAdvisor), the three Ws in Manhattan have all experienced bed bugs but two of them haven't had a report since 2011; one of them has a report as recent as August 2013.

I really wouldn't be too concerned - just take the regular precautions and keep an eye out for any blood stains. Sweep over the bed with your hand when you settle in. If you start to get irritable, see a doctor. Regular precautions (and part of travel).

Most Manhattan hotels will have some "hits" of bed bugs against them. Obviously, some more than others, which is likely a function of how well the property has been kept, but that is only a reduction of risk, not an absolute guarantee.

Finally, I don't think bed bugs discriminate, so whether they are trendy bed bugs or ghetto bed bugs or.......

It's the traveller who introduces the bugs. Not the hotel's fault.

If I'm using that site correctly, it seems the W Downtown and the W Times Square have had no incidences of bed bugs. But yes, will be hyper vigilant...
