Hey everybody! My son (we are from Germany) is planning to go to Sidney to see his friend for Xmas ( I hope it will possible by that time). They met on the Internet about a year ago and that their first meeting in real life. Could you advise any EU card which he can used in Australia without extra fees and which can be linked to my account so I will see and control his spendings

Our borders won't be opening this year sorry to say.. The way things are going

For the card, check your local Citibank offerings perhaps?

this came up with a google search.

maybe check with your bank to see if they have any cards that are fee free. Any fees would come from the bank on your side.

you can pretty much go for days if not weeks without using cash here. so a card is the definitely a plus here!

Have a look at the various N26 bank accounts in Germany. I believe N26 has no international transaction fees and is accepted worldwide, although it's only a debit card (not a credit card).

I've had a few Europe-based friends come over with TransferWise cards. They say the rates are pretty much unbeatable and you can lock in your rate ahead of time, if you want to.

In all honesty you'll probably get better answers from the European Frequent Flyers forum (or whatever it's called over there!) given you are looking for an EU issued card.

I regularly use TransferWise for transferring money between AUD and EUR, and the exchange rates/low fees are very good.

Vielfliegertreff.de could be a good place for the OP to look.

From what I remember the transfer wise daily limits are very low

Which limits are you referring to?

ATM withdrawals are free up to $350 per day, then charged at 2%. There's no limit on card purchases afaik, so the strategy is to just pay on card (which is probably what OP wants anyway so he can see where his money is going)

aah thanks. i thought the $350 was a limit/day for everything (cash+card), not just cash withdrawals

I use Revolut Junior for my kids. Easy to control the card via the app.

You can check Blackcatcard. It works all over the globe. The account is opened online and you can issue for your son an additional card linked to your account. That's a euro mastercard card so it will be convenient for you to load it up. Withdrawal at 2% at any cash machine accepting Mastercard in any country. Setup and maintenance of the account is free but as far as I remember there is a small fee for maintenance of additional cards.
