Based on some positive comments by Serfty, I'm looking at booking a Starclass MEL-BKK (also QF Y is full) for a business trip . The travel agent has provided a draft itinerary with BKK to PVG with China Eastern and then PVG-MEL (via SYD) on QF130 after a few days in Shanghai.
I have done some searches on AFF for China Eastern and not much is complimentary. The plane is a A321 and I read that CE (MU) had purchased a large number of new airbus planes.
As there are a fair few of you out there who travel in the Asian area, are there any good alternatives. I'm WP so should be able to access BKK lounge no matter what airline I take.
Also kicking myself that I missed seeing the thread on APEC cards!
Cheers.

This is quite a common routing for a few of my group at work. The horror stories of China Eaastern are particularly common :) I think the only realsitic alternatives are through HK with Cathay (not much good unless you need an excuse to go there) ot Thai. Thai can be hit and miss depending which aircraft they are using, but they are at least generally safe.

I would choose Thai if possible, but choose your flight carefully as they codeshare with Air India(AI) and China Eastern(MU).

The pick out the Chinese airlines is Dragon Air (KA) IMO. So far I have managed to avoid MU, so I cannot comment, but I would assume similar standard to China Southern (CZ) which seems OK, just don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed.....it is just a seat. All CZ flights I have been on are fairly modern aircraft also.

If you want to stick to the mainstream carriers, you will need to route through HKG.

MU also has A330's as well as the A321's, but as an airline i avoid them at all cost ! (Of course i would take them over China Southern or China airlines)
How can MU loose for 4 days a bag from SYD-PVG ??? explain that to me ! There is no stop overs, its either in SYD or its in PVG, so if it gets left behind in SYD put it on the next plane, not that hard you would think !

DragonAir (KA) i think is fantastic, but probably wont help you as i dont think they fly anywhere from BKK, only via HKG. Still there fares are cheap so could be a possability, and a little time in the CX lounge at HKG is never a bad thing i have decided ;)
