I managed to score a good business class price for SYD-DFW-BOG via American Airlines website.
  • I live in MEL, will book Qantas MEL-SYD (return) seperately on points.
  • SYD-DFW is on Qantas A380 (yay!).
Can I check in Qantas Melbourne and bags auto transfered to the Qantas international flight (remembering my international flight was ticketed by AA)?

Yes, QF will through check separate bookings if both flights are on QF (or EK). There is also an exemption for combination of revenue and reward tickets (to other oneworld airlines), so you’re doubly covered. It doesn’t matter who tickets it.

If the agent tells you no, ask for the supervisor.

AA won’t do the same on the return though, but you have to collect bags in SYD anyway. The transfer desk in T1 will recheck your bags for you and put you on the terminal transfer bus.
