Does anyone know how strictly Virgin Blue enforces the size limit for check-in luggage?

Under Virgin Blue's current policy, the sum of the width, length and depth for any piece of check-in luggage must not exceed 140cm. I am looking to check-in a box on a domestic flight which totals 160cm and I am wondering whether Virgin Blue will impose an additional charge? The weight of the box is only 16kg so no issue on the weight front.

I've never tried to take anything oversize on board a Virgin Blue flight but have seen others with large-ish looking items. You may be OK if the flight is not full however on the trunk routes (SYD-MEL, SYD-BNE) at peak times the flights are often full and overhead locker space is at a premium.

I have no experience of checking in something oversize. I guess it will depend upon the person at the check-in desk.

To be honest, I doubt a frontline checkin clerk can actually determine the size of a box unless they pull out their tape measure, or have size marking grids on their equipment.

Weight is another matter of course because each check-in desk has scales.

You are under the weight, and I assume the box is around 8cm too long on each of the 3 dimensions.

Very hard to casually pick up by someone unless they are very eagle eyed!

The last time I had big equipment to transport somewhere I just couriered it before my flight. Maybe something you should look into if you are concerned.
