Hi,

I am puzzled.

Can someone please confirm the baggage allowance for 2 passangers on Qantas.

We will be flying a combination of first class on internationals (LHR/SIN - SIN/PERTH SYD/HK) - the internals (hobart/Sydney Cairns/Brisbane) are in economy at this stage.

All flights are on Qantas.

We are getting very confused as to what we are allowed both as hand luggage and as checked in.

Many thanks.

Many Thanks.

So economy domestic has a higher checked allowance than Business itnernational - crazy....

How strict are they on carry-on weight - 7kg doesn't seem very high.

Only by 2kg

If the entire itinerary is on a single ticket , then the 1st class allowance is 40Kg and will apply to the whole journey if you are travelling 1st class internationally

If the domestic travel is on a separate ticket to the international, then the economy allowance of 1x32Kg will apply to the domestic legs

7kg may not be a huge amount, but how much stuff do you need with you during the flight? Going out of London , they are v strict on the 1 piece only - 1 piece means 1 piece, not 1 piece plus a laptop or purse etc

Thanks - the internals are on separate tickets :(

We have 4 tickets in total.

7KG - doesn't go too far when carrying camera's & lenses - heck the case itself is 5.95 kg (Peli case) :)

Isn't the idea of a pelican case that it is robust and protects the contents making it quite suitable for going in normal checked luggage

True - but would you trust $40K's worth of gear to baggage handlers :( Would I ever see it again?

Don't worry too much about the weight restrictions of carry on luggage - I've never seen or heard of them actually weighing them. Just as long as it obviously isn't something too big or too heavy (ie. you're dragging it along the terminal floor rather than propping it over your shoulder).

Though if it is too big in terms of Size (dimensions )they may stop you at the gate and make you check it in.

This was discussed some time ago. I've been at Melbourne Airport where they have done a 100% check weigh of everyones carry on. Having said that you are probably OK on MOST occasions.

I have seen them weigh carry-on luggage for both domestic and international flights. I would not recommend ignoring the limits . I once had to check my brief case when it was weighed and was over the limit. I had to remove my laptop and carry it with me while my briefcase went in the hold. That was a QF domestic flight and I was a Platinum FF with QF at the time.

I have never had a piece of luggage lost by Qantas

The Qantas conditions of carriage contain this little gem:

Flying with Us - Before You Travel - Conditions of Carriage
You must not include in your checked baggage fragile or perishable articles, money, jewellery, precious metals, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables (including but not limited to cameras and electronic equipment)
<continues>

In addition, a lot of Travel Insurance companies have similar restrictions. You may have no or little insurance for your gear if checked in.

If your gear really is that valuable, then you have a few options.
1. Get it specially insured and make sure your insurance company will insure you for it when checked.
2. Speak to Qantas about invoking the following clause:
Flying with Us - Before You Travel - Baggage - Carry on Baggage
These bulky baggage items may be carried in the cabin subject to Qantas approval:

* Diplomatic baggage
* Courier bags
* Valuable or fragile items
* Musical instruments
* Works of Art
* Scientific instruments and equipment
3. Fedex or similar your equipment and get it properly insured during transit.
