When going through security with baby food, is there much hassle in carrying on milk in excess of the 100mL allowance? It would probably be one or two 200mL tetrapaks. Our other option is to take powdered formula (avoiding the liquid problem), but it wouldn't be in the original packaging and I'm somewhat apprehensive about taking a little baggie of white powder with us to Indonesia, Singapore, etc.

We took heaps of baby food to/from the UK (and through SIN) - little sachets/tubes of solid food - with no issues. When you say tetrapaks - do you mean the pre-made formula - about te size of a juicebox? I wouldn't imagine there would be issues with those?

Cool, we will go with the liquid. Yep it's just the little cartons (regular long-life milk, not formula).

Below is the official blurb from http://travelsecure.infrastructure.gov.au/international/lags/exemptions.aspx

Travelling with a baby or infant

Passengers travelling with an infant or toddler are permitted to carry a reasonable quantity of liquid, aerosol or gel products for the infant or toddler onboard for the duration of the flight and any delays that might occur. The security screening officer has the final say about what a 'reasonable quantity' is.
Baby products may include, but are not limited to:
  • baby milk, including breast milk;
  • sterilised water;
  • juice;
  • baby food in liquid, gel or paste form; and
  • disposable wipes.
Products such as baby milk powder that are not liquids, aerosols or gels can be taken onboard.

I've seen parents being asked to sample baby food that they're taking through security (At Heathrow). Not sure how that would be handled (if required) with tetrapacks.

There should be no problems at all... Just about every country with LAG rules has exceptions for baby foods, provided that you actually have a baby or small child with you, and it's in quantities appropriate for the flight...

Last year I took my 15 month old (at the time) daughter with me OS, no one battered an eye lid...

I've had everything from bottled water being fine (Venice) to the "you must open and taste that food" (Heathrow). Generally, you should be fine, as long as it's all reasonable amounts for the flights you're on.
If you're taking formula for the flight, I'd use one of the pre-measured containers, should help you fell less "suss" for the white granules. Thought it would just take a quick taste by any customs person to realise it's milk/formula.
