Hi There,
This is my first post on AFF, so apologies if my question has been answered before. I am a QF gold FF and have a booking from MEL-LHR via SYD on BA metal and was emailed a special upgrade offer of $500 each way. I have been told that the upgrade class is P class which seems to be the award class for Y+ on BA? Has anyone taken up this or a similar offer? and if so, do you earn miles and SC for Y+ and is it worth it?

thanks for your help.

The airline earning table doesn’t list P for British Airways, so I don’t think you’d earn anything from it, and I’m not sure what you’d earn based off your original ticket.

i believe the original fare was O class so it should earn full miles as its on the AUS-UK run, but i wonder how the miles will credit as surely the flights will post as being flown in P, with no miles? Secondly, I have never heard of airlines "selling" their award inventory for $$ instead of miles. Is this a common thing?

lastly, does anyone think WTP is worth the $500? I know on BA its just the seat as the service is all WT, as opposed to QF who offer a J- service.

thanks again....

I would pay it personally. The food is not great (as it is whY) but the seat is bigger. I am 185cm so that is important to me.

I dont watch much IFE (as I have the iPad for that) and I would really just be paying extra for the seat.

Thanks very much. Just upgraded the outbound leg. The flight is BA 15 via BKK on the 52J config where Y+ is between F and J, so should be interesting!

Just make sure you help yourself to the Club kitchen snack bar - just to annoy the J class fliers from the BA board at Flyertalk ;)

I think P class is in the BA Y+ reward bucket - I have a classic QFF pts booking for SIN-SYD in BA WT+ in April and the qf.com MMB booking page shows as follows
Status: Confirmed
Travel Class: Economy (P)

I checked with QF when I saw this and they said it was definitely booked into WT+, and not to worry. Obviously this is a classic booking, so I am not expecting to earn pts/SC's but YMMV.

From memory BA used to offer on-board upgrades to WT+ for ~$150/sector or was that $300/sector?

SCs earned should be for the original booking class.

Do you know if this still occurs and if so, how? Also, when you say sector, I assume that doesnt mean LHR-SYD but rather LHR-SIN/BKK?
Thanks in advance.....

I have not encountered it personally but it used to get posted on AFF regularly. And yes it was sector based as some people used to purchase LONE4's etc and were able to upgrade the BA sectors to WT+

Whether it still happens probably best to visit the BA board on Flyertalk.

Does that mean you disembark after F and before J??
It depends which door(s) are being used. If just using door 1L then F deplane first, followed by WT+ then CW then WT. If doors 1L and 2L are being used, then F gets first pick at 1L followed by WT+, while CW gets first pick at 2L followed by WT.

Having flown into LHR on tuesday, only door 1 was in use so F got off first followed by WT+ followed by CW(J) then WT(Y). Secondly, the upgrade was only $500 but was totally not worth it, especially on BA metal where the only benefit was a slighty better seat, and by slighty i mean negligible, and noise cancelling headphones, of which i always have my own anyway. Thirdly, as the "paid" upgrade was into P class, the award redemption class on BA, 0 miles and SC's were awarded even though the original fare purchased was in a mileage accrual class. Whenever ive upgraded a QF flight using points or the old upgrade credits, i was always awarded miles and SC's for the original fare class booked and paid for. i know its a simple email/phonecall to the QFF service centre, but its really an issue you shouldnt need to deal with. overall, pretty poor report for BA's WT+.

sorry for the late reply to the original UP question...

flew QF codeshare on BA metal.

LHR to HKG (Y to Y+) was 150 pounds and sge said its the same if its to SYD as long as its same flight number....

I asked the question in SYD checkin on the outbound and they didnt look like they know what I was referring to and told me it was 900. whata.....

"Happy flighting"

Last BA flight to BKK was in J and they asked if I wanted to pay for upgrade to F. Stupidly said no and didn't even ask how much it was  ... (in my defence I was distracted as I was on my way to a funeral back home)

I managed to get credited as W instead of Y which was 0.25 pts per mile

This actually seems fair as you have paid for the upgrade. It was not a miles upgrade...

Had to send emails to Qff to chase it as BA recon it was still discount Y.

So keep the NCO receipt of payment as boarding pass is not enough

Taking the issue aside of what sounds fair from memory the reports on AFF suggested that you only got credit for original class booked not upgraded class including paid upgrades at check-in or on-board paid upgrades.
