From ATW Daily News:

Claiming that "aviation remains in recession," British Airways posted a £102 million ($168.8 million) net loss in the fiscal second quarter ended Sept. 30 that pushed its first-half deficit to £208 million, a nearly fivefold deepening of the £42 million loss incurred during the year-ago period, when it lost £76 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008.

like most things British at present, there is very suboptimal management at play.
One wonders how QF entertained the idea of a merger, especially with the unfunded pension liabilities

Well it was the same airline who entertained the idea of a private equity buy-out that may have shattered Qantas into oblivion (with the debt that it would have had and the GFC). Perhaps Qantas also has ineptitude at high levels.

It's a shame it has to come to job cuts, and surely the unions are going to complain no end, but I don't see how future unemployment when the airline goes bankrupt is better than laying off some staff for the greater good.
