RECENT MEDIA RELEASE
British Airways has today placed an order for 12 Airbus A380 and 24 Boeing 787 aircraft with options for a further seven Airbus A380s and 18 Boeing 787s. Both aircraft types will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines.
The new aircraft will replace 34 of the airline's longhaul fleet and will be delivered between 2010 and 2014. The order, including options, will give the airline the ability to grow its capacity by up to four per cent per year and the flexibility to tailor its future capacity growth in line with market conditions.
The aircraft will be greener, quieter and more fuel efficient with significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions and reduced impact on local air quality. This was a key consideration in the order.
Willie Walsh, British Airways' chief executive, said: "This is an exciting day for British Airways with our largest fleet order since 1998. It's great news for our business, our customers and the environment.
"These aircraft set the gold standard when it comes to environmental performance in the key areas of CO2 emissions, local air quality and noise. They will contribute significantly to our target of improving fuel efficiency by 25 per cent between 2005 and 2025.

I wonder what is being delivered first, 2010 could be hard to get production slots for either the 787 or the A380.
Good to see some fleet updates being announced :)

Now if only AA decide on some real fleet updates !

(If you notice SQ turn over there fleet very often, i have no idea why, as they replace like for like often, same with CX who signed a deal for A330's to replace exisiting A330's, i guess they just get a lot of use)

I believe AA are getting some fleet updates approved. Keep in mind that they aren't the richest airline in the world - nor are any of their other "American" airlines friends.

CX (like Hawaiian airlines, but not as bad) would have a lot of short cycles on their aircraft. Could well be a reason for their choice to turn over their aircraft quickly.

That ends any speculation about BA going for the 747-8 passenger variant. I don't think Boeing has taken a single order on this passenger jet yet. Seems that airlines are going for the 777 as their "large" aircraft or stepping up to the A-380. Unless one of the big US carriers comes in, and as pointed out above they have no money, it looks like the 747-8 passenger jet will never see the light of day. Sad in a way.

Somebody better tell the Germans then...

Boeing: Boeing, Lufthansa Announce Order for 747-8 Intercontinental

mt

Lufthansa is launch customer for the 747-8 but there is also about 6 or 7 freight companys lined up to purchase the 'F' version 747-8F i guess.
So only 1 passanger order so far confirmed.....
I am sure other airlines are considering the 747-8's as well, but no doubt a very expensive plane and not so each to operate compared to the all new generation planes.

I suspect a lot of airlines willl look at the 787-9's as replacments (Given the 777 is now oldish)

If the 747-8's do not happen it may just be to Airbus advantage, more potential customers for the A380 maybe as i think believe there will be a market for a large long haul passanger jet with 3 or 4 classes onboard, but only time will tell.

Didn't know Lufthansa had made that order. Even so, I don't know if a single order of 20 planes will see it become a reality...not sure, does anyone know what the minimum would be for Boeing to actually go into production?

Would depend upon commonality with the 400 and how many freighters are sold. .... and a few hundred other things :!:

The reason SQ can turn aircraft over every few years is the SIN Govt (read SQ owners) offer very generous depreciation schedules of only a few years vs Aust (an I'm no accountant but the OZ schedule is well over 10 years) for aircraft..but at least they pay tax (...although a mate in SIN brags about his 15% tax rate ) the United EK just pay no tax..puts Western airlines competing well behind the 8 ball. I wish I could write off a 100m plus aircraft the same as you write down a $1,000 lap top over 3 years..certainly reduces yr cost of capital somewhat
I have no knowledge of the tax regime in HKG so cannot comment
