Hi,

Wanted to check in here with our esteemed AFFer's as I have never done this before.

Looking to book

MEL-SYD: BA7440 (operated by QF408), connecting to

SYD-SIN: BA16

Would I
(i) be able to through check luggage without collecting in SYD (understand I will need to make the QF Dom - QF Int hop)
(ii) be able to get my BA BP early in MEL so that I can maximise the F lounge (which is really the most important point :))

If its in 2 separate bookings then you will have to collect bags in SYD domestic and recheck them in SYD international. BA will not even through check luggage from one BA flight (non codeshare) to another BA flight (non codeshare) if they are on separate bookings.
The BP is not the issue as the rate limiting step will be your luggage.

If its on one booking then no problem and your BP will be issued in MEL.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes will be one booking so seems all fine! Thanks!

It is a BA codeshare on a domestic leg connecting to a BA international flight, there won't be a problem with baggage. It is not possible to book a codeshare on its own without a connecting longhaul flight marketed and/or operated by the marketing carrier of the short codeshared flight.

ie, any BA codeshare within Australia can only be booked on the same ticket as a BA coded flight out of Australia. Can't book QF AMS-LHR without also having a QF coded flight ex LHR on the same ticket.

Since they are both on the same ticket, QF will check bags through and issue boarding passes for both flights, however BA staff will want to see passports/visas if needed at some stage, likely when you get to the gate in SYD.

Thanks all.

Yes indeed that's what I will be doing - i.e. using the BA website to book through on one ticket MEL-SYD (BA Codeshare, QF Metal) and then SYD-SIN (BA Metal) and am intentionally choosing the early 7am departure from MEL to max F lounge time in SYD

Like others have mentioned, i didn't want to be waiting around SYD for a BA BP(and luggage) when i could be in the F lounge. :)

You'll get both boarding passes and bag will be checked through to SIN. You should be given the green departure card as well as an express card for immigration. The express lane is a long corridor immediately to the right of the Coffee Club opp QF First Class checkin at the SYD Intl terminal.

Just make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity to satisfy SIN Immigration requirements.

Hi ermen,

I can give you a data point for this, as I did a very similar trip in September:

AA award booking for QF515 BNE-SYD in J, connecting to BA16 SYD-SIN in F, on one PNR.

Suitcases were checked through to SIN.
BNE QF desk could only give me QF515 BP.
On arriving at SYD, used the Dom-Int shuttle bus, and as I was still land side, went to the BA First check-in desk to obtain BA16 BP. Was also given an express card (as predicted by ozbeachbabe).
Then it was straight the QF F lounge. :) Was my first time there. Great start to the holiday. :)
In the lounge, they did make a boarding call announcement for BA16.
It was quite a walk from the lounge to the gate.
I was with my young son, and so couldn't walk too quickly. We were the last to board. Gulp!

Enjoy your trip.

Sometimes you won't be able to get the boarding pass for the connecting flight if a link is down between two airlines involved or other factors such as the next flight being oversold in that cabin or too many seats blocked off for airport use by the next airline (ie number of blocked seats exceeds available seats in that cabin). As in your case this does not having any bearing on your checked bags being through checked to the final destination so you only need to get the boarding pass at your next stop.

Ah! Thanks Bluenose.

Thats an annoying wildcard. I chose an early MEL-SYD flight in order to get BP to get into the F lounge at 10am :) if i had to wait around for the counter to open, kinda defeats the purpose lol...

Well hope things go smoothly there...

Hi Oz and ermen,

Oz,
Yeah, that's what happened to me - QF's computer wasn't speaking to the BA computer. After the QF check-in at BNE couldn't give me my BA16 boarding pass, I asked in the BNE lounge for it and also got "computer says no". Once I received my BA bp in Sydney and got into the QF F lounge with it, I went to the F desk and asked for the assigned seats to be changed - they tried but couldn't do it - again the QF computer wasn't speaking to the BA computer and they advised me to ask at the gate. When it time for boarding, we arrived late so I was more focused on making the flight, and worrying about the seats later.

In F that day, six seats were occupied, and eight were empty. The BA hostie was great and she sorted out the seating for us.

Ermen,
Good luck with getting early access to the QF F lounge. It's a great idea. You've got to make the most of the opportunity. :) If MEL cannot give you a BA bp, maybe try to generate it on your phone when you arrive in SYD? At 10am, definitely try to get in to the QF F lounge - best to wait there for the BA counter to open (at 12 noon?)! Or hopefully the QF-BA link is working, and the F lounge desk can issue your BP to you.

Bluenose
