As from the 7th October, BA will be reducing the economy baggage allowance

Allowances for Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and direct connections between India and USA, Bermuda and Canada will remain at 2 pieces for economy

All other routes ( incluiding USA/Canada to UK) will be 1 Piece

Excess fee for bags weighing > 23Kg will be increased from GBP25 to GBP40

Also, the allowance of an additional piece of sporting gear is being removed; sporting goods will
be counted as part of regular allowance

On the plus side, BA is giving additional allowances to those with Silver or Gold status with BA travelling in economy and will be entitled to 2 pieces in economy on all routes

I still don't understand why BA doesn't seem to recognise OW status on their site (eg Lounge descriptions etc) - apart from when you book a flight and get the various perks associated with it.

The changes don't seem to be anything special to me - bar the sports goods stuff.

They've already been having a 'soft' 32->23Kg changeover for BA Premium pax for a while. Perhaps also OW status members, but I don't know for sure.

I would not be surprised if the extra allowance applies to BA members only ( in the same way that QF's additional allowances for Silver/Gold/Platinum only apply to its own members )

The changes would seem to be significant to those doing ATW journeys in economy

Dave

From my experience at SIN the extra allowances does apply to BA's own members only, not other OW.
Having said that being OWE quickly got the whY restrictions for number of pieces lifted for me :)

I was only checking in 10kgs or so... but 2 bags, the problem is there system is getting smart and the check in agents can only print on tag for a bag if the person is whY now it seems. They have to get approval and an override from somebody more senior (By that i assume in an office because i was at F check-in)

BA currently has no additional allowance for its own members, This is new with the changes

Following along, AA has got into the swing of reducing its allowances too

For those in economy without status, for bookings from 14 september, there will be a USD50 fee for the 2nd piece of luggage on international routes to Europe and India

Those in business class or 1st class or holding OW status will be exempted the fee

American Airlines Changes To Checked Bag Charges On AA.com

Dave

I try to carry the minimum possible anyway... but i am wonder how many the AA change would affect since even on USA-Europe flights people seem to not check in much so i doubt the second bag disappearing would affect many at all, or for that matter if the same was done by QF to the USA.

I am not sure how revenue this really brings airlines or if they see any reduction in luggage brought by passengers.

Potential low cost carriers to Europe become more attractive if the full service carriers can't provide the 'extras' at their higher costs.

On a not too unrelated note, today I got an email from the BA Executive Club announcing I could now earn Tier Points on all economy flights. This might help get to Silver or Gold status and a higher baggage allowance.

Dear Mr Heathfield,

We’re delighted to tell you that as of 18 August 2009, you’ll be able to earn Tier Points on every flight* you take with us and our oneworld® partners. This even includes flights on discount economy tickets, for which you’ll receive 25% of the Tier Points you’d earn on fully flexible economy tickets.
