Ayers rock / uluru help

Have done the Rock twice. The second times was to show my three daughters.

Once post Uni on one of my favourite ever personal trips, as part of a self-guided 4WD trip - Flinders Ranges - the Simpson Desert- Puni Bore (since capped) -Dalhousie Springs - Ayers Rock/The Olgas - Gosses Bluff (and there is a meteroite crater!!!) - up the Finke River to Palm Valley and Hermansberg - Kings and all the other Canyons -The Alice - Mataranka springs - Katherine - Cape Barrooloola and then back to Melbourne along the Qld Coast including Fraser Island.

The second time with kids redeeming points through Ansett when it cost no extra points to add an extra stop in and so we had a fornight sailing in The Whitsundays and then a week touring around Central Australia in a rental 4WD after flying in to The Alice.

Camped both times and so accommodation costs were minimal. We enjoy our bushwalks and so having our own transport was great as there are many interesting walks to do do near the Rock, and around The Olgas (Valley of The Winds)....not to mention many other places.

We climbed both times as back then there was not the angst that their is today about it.

The second time my youngest daughter was only 4 and she did most of it under her own steam with dad close by (I had a back pack to carry her in if needed). It took us 4 hours to summit, but the views were worth it.

A funny side-tale was that several days later we were heading off on a walk at Kings Canyon, and a mature lady was heard by us to remark to her equally mature female companion about that irresponsible family heading off for a long walk (we had back packs on etc and so clearly were not on just a few hundred metre car-park stroll )...whereupon her friend remarked back to her, " I would not be worried, I saw that little girl running around the top of Ayers Rock two days ago!!".

We walked around Uluru. We decided against climbing it as it seemed disrespectful. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies.

The Sounds of Silence Dinner was exceptional. We were supposed to do a camel trek but a storm hit just as I'd climbed the first camel and they went crazy. Have never seen rain and lightening like it before. Fabulous.

I really want to take my wife and my 13-year-old daughter, but it's all just so expensive.

Yes. Expensive. The tours are expensive, the accommodation has improved price wise but is still pricey, restaurants on site are expensive and average etc etc.

We did a trip with this group in 2012. (You can ignore the seniors reference in the link it was a diverse group). Not sure if it is the type of trip you would do but was great value & we had a top time. I posted a trip report on here at the time. http://www.australianfrequentflyer....utback-43628.html?highlight=central+australia.

Yep. Its really expensive. Which is why I wont be returning. It was very much a once off thing to do.

We camped in a tent which was a good intro to the temperature extremes towards ground level in the desert. I really enjoyed Kings Canyon. Packing up a very cold dewy red sand covered tent was a trial too. I'd still recommend it for parents and kids, once - beautiful spot.

Thanks RB. I couldnt find your TR as I was looking under Ayers rock or Uluru. It sounds like a fantastic time and has given us a few ideas.
Just another question. How good is the J lounge at Ayers Rock airport:p?
