If I was to get a Gold status family member a flight for me (as they have greater award availability) am I then able to make changes to it including adding flights to eventually make it a Oneworld award using my points?

Or is the person who booked the original flight (despite the fact they weren't a passenger) the only person allowed to make changes?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You can change the booking as you are the passenger but it will depend on your points balance if you can complete the booking. I recently converted two Classic Awards to two 280K One World Awards and in order to do this the Agents cancel the classic awards, refund the points to the account they were obtained from and re-book the itinerary with the extra flights as a one world award.
You will need to have enough points for the entire 280K to come from your own points at the time of booking the extra flights.
Family transfers will be the way forward once the initial booking is made.

Ok so the process would be as follows

1. I transfer the points to my family member for the initial flight
2. Family member books flight for me
3. When I am ready to book subsequent flights I contact QFF and change my booking. I need the entire points in my account for the subsequent bookings. Points come off my balance and the initial points would go back on my family members balance.
4. Family member would then need to transfer points back to me.

Have I got that right?

A couple of further questions - I presume the agent when changing the booking by canceling the original flights places tem on hold so that they don't go back into the pool and get taken?

When booking the second and third flights of a RTW trip they don't create a Oneworld award yet (as individual flights are less than 140K points) so do you ring up and change the original booking from one flight to two flights or do you keep booking individual flights until you get to a flight that will take you over 140k points and then get them combined.

The original flight is still held in your name and it becomes part of the extended one world award.
You will not lose the flight if the additional flights are added at the same time.
I constructed and booked the entire itinerary on the phone in one go once the subsequent flights became available.
It should be possible to link multiple Classic Awards booked online separately into a single itinerary using the telephone booking service based on the first PNR but I did not test this.
The Plat Desk stated that I could add flights into my booking later by ringing up and paying the points fee but I have not tried to do this.
I have changed flight dates and numbers on a HKG-SYD leg after booking and was not charged for this (an honest mistake I think though ;) )

Thanks for all your help last night Fiona. It gave me another option but fortunately I was able to book a seat in my own right today and save the other hassle.

It is probably a week early or a week late for a tour I was looking at, but I will work around it and if a more preferable date comes up grab it and wear the penalty.

You're very welcome, good luck with finding all the other flights :D
