Looking at an award seat purchase with QF to Bali from Sydney return (using JQ). Taxes are $208.16 per person!! If I book and pay normal fare through the JQ website, it states the taxes are $98.16 per person.

Any ideas on the reason for the extra tax $$ to redeem rather than purchase?

Real taxes to governments are the same. Airline imposed fees & surcharges are extra on some award flights

As Mwenenzi commented, it's likely that QF's fuel surcharge on the route is higher than JQ's fuel surcharge on the route.

With award tickets, generally the ticketing carrier gets to choose what fuel surcharge to apply.

I suppose as the aircraft refuellers are filling it up they note the number of QF ticketed passengers and charge a different rate for the fuel for those passengers

Actually, I believe it's slightly different. At the airport there is a Qantas refueller and a Jetstar refueller. The JQ employee costs a little less, and is only allowed to fill the plane up with enough fuel for the JQ ticketed passengers. Because of union rules, the QF refueller then has to step in and add enough fuel to cover the QF ticketed pax. There is also another staff member jointly paid by both JQ and QF to supervise this arrangement and ensure union rules are not broken.

;)

The JQ refueller does not get everyday rewards points for his fuel either.

Why isn't the Qantas refueller paying for all of the fuel like everything else they bank roll for JQ!
