Award for Alan Joyce

The Portuguese airline TAP'S CEO got an award too. That's the airline notorious for 'service' in business class that may or may not extend to giving out some water. Such is the nature of these psrticular awards.

Not the type of company I'd like to keep, but something for Alan Joyce and his team can aspire to, I guess.

A rather dubious no-name award given to someone who essentially hand-held investor confidence through a bit of book-cooking and some fortunate timing.

If AJ deserves any award, it isn't this one.

So you get an award if your fortunate enough to be around when the price of crude oil is low?
No! Completely over simplified it. He was CEO when oil prices are low AND he kept charging the fuel surcharge, but hid it in the base fare. Ya gotta reward genius like that.

Because that is all he has done....

He also stopped the capacity war that he started and propagated, completely shut down the airline after a tiff with his unions and abandoned all international services west of MEL.

He was also helped by his only competition being under a greater financial pressure than QF for a sustained period of time (which still is the case).

Still looking after customers with outrageous award fees and charges too, he deserves some sort of award... maybe Fees and Fuel Award.

While he was lucky in many ways to bring QF back in the black. You can't deny him the successful strategy for partnering with EK to effectively bring the kangaroo route to the entire Europe and Africa with 1 hop. I think this helped QF survive the intense competition on that route from Asian and other gulf carriers.

Whether it has been 'successful' for passengers is debatable. Asian airports are far more attractive transit or stopover points than the zoo of DXB, which tries to be a third class Changi and fails.

QF is about to reduce capacity to DXB when the PER - LHR B789 nonstops commence in 2018.

Perhaps a Sainthood next.

Meanwhile fuel surcharges cost the same as sale airfares when I redeem my hard earned points that are supposed to reward me for my loyalty to Qantas.

I don't particularly like DXB (or EK) either, but I think that's a bit harsh. And I've been through DXB more times than I care to remenber, as an ex-Gold Skywards member.
