Hey fellow AFFs,

I suspect that there will be no better answer than "just keep looking" here but I will see if anyone has any tips.

I am looking at doing a 140K One World RTW award trip next year, hoping to start around 8 Feb 2014.

My first destination of choice is South America and Santiago although I wouldn't mind doing a <24 hour stopover in Auckland. This week the 8 Feb became within 353 days. It seems that the two hardest legs to get Award flights on are Aust / NZ to South America and South America to USA. Therefore I am happy to book these as soon as possible and wear the points / fees to change when adding the remaining flights to have the One World Award. Therefore I have been trying to book a flight this week to start my journey.

The last three days, Qantas have released just one business class seat on QF321 the LAN code share that goes through Auckland on all of the 8, 9, 10 Feb, but no economy seats and none on the direct flight which goes on Mon, Wed and Saturday. I have been looking at Expert Flyer and going onto QFF at 11am to try and book my seat straight away. There was a reward seat or two available on the 6th and 7th but they are gone now and I chose not to take them at the time, thinking I could get one on my preferred dates when they became available.

I also rang up QFF today and thought I might have a go at asking to get a seat released (as I expected they would only do it for Platinum, Plat One or CL) and had a chat to the lady and she couldn't offer much more than keep looking. She also checked that there had been no award bookings on those flights so it is not as if someone miraculously got in ahead of me.

Has anyone got any tips? Are they likely to go back and release awards for those dates? How likely are they to release an award for the next few days? I am keen to get one of these dates as I would like to start a tour from Buenos Airies on 14 Feb or potentially a similar tour from another company on 17 Feb.

Other option is of course to take the Business Class seat but I only have around 220K points (possibly could get it up by maybe American Express Platinum Bonus) but from my research J class seats are normally harder to get for the other flights than Y and I think I would rather have some points in the bank to go back to some of these places in the next few years.

Must say I am a bit disappointed, I thought QF would have at least some award seats for every flight, even if you had to get them the best part of a year out.

When i look in Jan 2014 i see flights from SYD to SCL on 13, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26...

Not heaps and heaps but a few, maybe you just need to wait another week or so for some more to come around in Feb?

Unless some nice WP here on the board might be able to see if they could ask on your behalf to see if a seat could be opened... Not sure if a WP could do that for someone else???

How close does your current planned itinerary take you to the 35,000 mile limit??? If you have a few thosand to spare you could always go SYD-LAX and then down into South America, wonder if you could even go across the pacific with QF to one of the islands and then does LAN fly from one Pacific Island via Easter Island to SCL??? Might not be any award seats on it???

Hi casanovawa,

Yes you are right those dates are available, although at one stage this week they did have seats available for Mon 3, Thur 6 and Fri 7 Feb but they seem to be gone now. A Business Class seat is available Sat 8, Sun 9 and Mon 10. As I say, I specifically didn't take the Fri 7 because ideally I would like to go CBR-AKL on the 8th and AKL-SCL on the 9th (within 24 hours so it is not a separate segment - this is not essential as I have been to Auckland a number of times) and I thought I would jump in straight away when they opened up for those dates. I was very disappointed today when one didn't open up for Mon 10 because looking throughout 2012, Monday seems to be a day when they are normally available.

My planned itinerary will be very close to the 35,000 limit. Specifically the flights I am looking for are:

Canberra - Auckland - Santiago (Auckland is not compulsory and can easily get to Sydney if need be)
Santiago - Miami (or Lima - Miami even better but I don't think that is available)
Toronto - London
London - Cape Town
Johannesburg - Hong Kong
Hong Kong - Canberra

I have done numerous tests of this over the past 6 months and if fulfils the oneWorld award. I have checked on Great Circle Mapper and it is somewhere between 34 - 35k miles.

Regarding the WP getting a seat released. Not sure if it is allowed, but would certainly be greatful if someone was to offer!!

(Before anyone mentions it - Rio Carnivale was that weekend this year, next year with Easter being late April as opposed to this year when it is late March, it is not until the start of March so I am about 3 weeks ahead of it)

Similar to what i did (South America-North America-Europe-Africa) in 2011 but from JNB just flew back to SYD then PER... Don't remember it being that hard getting the SYD-BUE flight as it was then, certainly wasn't like 12 months ahead i don't recall...

The stop in HKG doesn't leave many spare miles...

Now nothing released at all for the Tuesday. This is all very disappointing.

Now nothing for the Wed on either the direct flight QF 27 or the code share QF 321.

Go no idea what is going on?

Any suggestions

I can see economy seats on 6,7 and 10 Feb 2014 - but they are not the direct flight and are codeshare LAN from Auckland to Santiago.

Hello love the life

Can you please tell me where you are seeing that. That is exactly what I am looking for.

Thanks to love_the_life and danger we have discovered that there are flights on 6 7 and 10 Feb only available to Gold members and above.

The question is - will these become available to pleb bronze such as myself and when?

Fortunately my problem has found a resolution. This morning I was able to book an award flight on Sun 16 Feb. Not ideal because it is too late to do a BUE - RIO tour that ends in Rio Carnivale and a little early to do Carnivale and then do the tour RIO - BUE but at least I have something and if something better comes up I will pay the points penalty to change.

Hopefully after this the rest of my RTW award will be a doddle!!
