Anyone had experience at canceling an award flight booked on QF. I have noticed there is a 5000 point fee. Do we get back our fines and taxes, if so does it take them long to credit back to cc. Also I remember seeing some members state that WP's can be excempt from some of the point charges, is that purely for changes to tickets or also for cancelations.

Regards reggie

Reggie, you do get back taxes/fines, and while I can't remember the exact time it took when I had to cancel an award flight earlier this year, it wasn't long (a few days I think). I can't find anything on QF site to suggest that WPs don't have to forfeit the 5000 pts, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I know I forfeited 5K pts (though I'm certainly not WP)!

It WILL cost the 5k points; the refund of remaining points and full $$$ can several weeks.

WP/SG/CL avoid the revalidation fee when changing dates/flights.

I have cancelled twice. The first time the refund took 6 weeks. The second time it took 2 weeks.

I cancelled an award flight earlier this year and the money was credited back to Amex credit card within 6 days.

In the end did not pay the 5,000 points cancellation as QF switched the days of the flights and i had connections to make after QF flight. They automatically charged my FF account with the 5,000 points cancellation fee and I had to call QF to get the charge reversed.

Maybe they have got quicker at refunding. My flights were last year.

Or maybe they only refund once a month, so it is luck if you cancel near their refunding day.

I had to postpone an award flight to a later date; wife and I were both Silver at the time so there was no penalty at all as long as we used the same routing (in this case SYD to LAX). But if we changed the routing (eg via MEL or BNE - which would normally have slightly lower fees) the extra cost was substantial, you have to pay the taxes/fines all over again with no refund or something. So we are doing the SYD to LAX trip in a few days at the old points rate of 80,000 per person for economy rather than the current 96,000 as it was originally booked before the new rules came into effect. I must say the QF call centre were very helpful with making the change too.

My saving grace could have been that QF had knocked me around with the scheduled flight changes and so refunded the money quicker or that I had asked them to process the refund promptly as I had no money and needed to book new flights.

I had paid ticket SYD-DRW connecting to award ticket DRW-SIN(-SYD) connecting to paid ticket on AY SIN-BKK. The paid ticket was refunded the next day and the award ticket taxes & charges and FF points took 6 days.

Thanks for that guys. The reason I was asking is that I have booked some flights in mid August, but found out I may need to go 2 days earlier (wont know to mid to late this week. As there are seats available at the moment I was contemplating booking a oneway sector in case there was a move and then cancelling. But I think I will wait and make a change if required.
