Hi everyone

Hoping you guys will be able to help me. My mother and I are planning a trip to the US in September. We have obviously left it too late to grab 2 x J tickets on Qantas SYD-LAX-SYD. I came across a thread about using the Multi City Option and going via HKG with Cathay Pacific. My dad has about 350 000 QFF Points and my mum about 100 000. Not enough for SYD-HKG-LAX-SYD for 2 J tickets.

I was thinking about buying 2 x Y Tickets SYD-HKG-SYD. I can get them for around 950 dollars on the QF Website each. I then went on to QF Hong Kong site and I can easily get 2 x J tickets on Cathay HKG-LAX-HKG on a wide range of dates. Taxes are 350 dollars each. So for around 1300 dollars I can use my points and have the pleasure of travelling business class half the way. (I have never travelled business) I love Hong Kong so would be happy to spend a few days there each side to break the journey. One Y ticket SYD-LAX-SYD is around 2000 return so I am thinking this is good value. With Qantas having lots of issues at the moment my mum and dad think it would be a good time to use their points and my dad would rather use the points and let us enjoy them as he doesn't travel very often.

My Questions are

I know my mum can transfer her points to dad to make up the difference in points needed. Are the points transferred available to use straight away or does it take a few days?

Once my dad has all the points as a Frequent Flyer, can he book the seats under his account for us, even though he wont be travelling?

And finally- Am I breaking the rules my logging on the QF Hong Kong website to book the HKG-LAX-HKG and using my points to book that part of the journey? Obviously I cant book the HKG-LAX on the Australian Website.

Thankyou in Advance.

Before you transfer any points to your Dad's FF account, double check asap when those points expire which he can check when loggin into his ff account. If he doesn't travel that often it's important that he has some kind of activity (family transfers do not count) eg a Woollies shop of at least $31.00 assuming he has a Woollies Everyday Rewards card linked to his QF ff account.

Totally your decision but if i was flying Y for 8-9 hours just to fly J? it hardly seems worth it, unless they particularly enjoy flying, going to hkg for a reason etc.

As already said be careful about your dads last activity before your mum transfers the points. In my experience the points have taken about a week to slow up in the account of the person receiving the points. If all checks out and he has had activity on his account in the last year then go for it.

Once my dad has all the points as a Frequent Flyer, can he book the seats under his account for us, even though he wont be travelling?

Absolutely.

You can also use your points for an Award flight for an eligible family member.

No problems at all. Just remember the taxes will be in HKD not AUD.

Thankyou in Advance.

Sounds like a fun trip. If CX will be your first ride in J you will have made a wise choice.

...
my experience is different to this - the points have shown up from a QFF to QFF family transfer within a couple of minutes.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

FWIW 3 out of 3 family transfers I have done have been completed within the hour.

After checking back to see exactly how long it took the one and only time I have done this, it was 5 days for the transfer to complete. Deducted almost instantly from source then 5 days to credit to destination account.

I have moved points between family accounts a number of occasions and it always completed by the time I could log into the transferee account.

Assuming that you will have 450,000 ff points available for use (350K + 100K) that's 450K total or 225K each. Another option would be to fly:

SYD/HKG in PE 45K plus AUD220.98 taxes pp
HKG/LAX in J 104K plus HKG1,363.00 pp or AUD195.98
LAX/NAN in J 72K plus USD2.50 taxes pp

Total points needed 221K pp or 442 total. If you had another 30K total in points you could fly J SYD/HKG which is 60K points plus AUD220.98 taxes pp.

To get back NAN/SYD I would just buy a cheap one way fare which would be approx. AUD300.00 each.

My experience with family transfers has seen the points transfer immediately into the other family members account.

You can still do the HKG/LAX award booking from the QF AU site just remember to tick the box to display all cities worldwide.

I think you were quite unlucky - we have 5 FF accounts and I often shift points around - they have always happened immediately.

as have mine. but nevertheless the warnings about account activity are necessary
