Hi guys,

Are award J seats on this route close to impossible ?
Nobody speaks of it (compared to say transpacific F where the issues seem well-known) but I'm looking for two J seats for anytime in the next 11 months and cannot find anything.

Do QF even release award J seats on this route ? Is the %utilisation that good in J that its always full with revenue pax ?
Any tricks that I need to be aware of ?

If indeed QF do release 2 J seats 353 days out etc as per F transpacific can someone please remind me at what time exactly are seats released ? Is it 0800 AEDT or something like that ?

Thanks.

Can you have a look and see if there are any Points+Pay opportunities, rather than straight award seats?
If you go Points+Pay, some will say its not a good way to do it, it might turn out/up seats, and you earn the magical SC on the fare paid, flight flown.
I am a bull**** artist a lot of the time though.
EDIT: Aud$2556 per person, in J Sale (Business Sale), and then multiply that by 2, and then reduce it with your QF FF points balance.
18 May SYD - SCL test date
01 June SCL - SYD test date
You also earn 320 QF SC per person, enough to keep PS for another year. OR help attain/retain status, (haven't checked your current status).

I had a look for J awards about 3 months ago, for flying this April and didn't see anything, although I didn't spend long looking. About the same time, up came a QF J sale - $4K return  :p. The first and so far only time I've been able to use a QF international sale for personal travel. As it happened the sale seats were available for a good month or so.

Just checked April 2015, and there is one, solitary J class award seat on 3 April (on the LAN code-share).

So would say they do exist, but rare.

Edit: On my codeshare flight on LAN SYD-SCL mid April, only 7 of the 20 J seats in the upper deck are reserved at the moment (actual bookings probably higher of course). On QF on the way back mid May, only 4 of the 20 upper deck seats are reserved (ditto). Lower deck J almost completely empty (un reserved).

I did SYD - SCL return last year and from what I saw when monitoring this route, QF very rarely released any J award seats. I think I saw a couple of single seats over a couple of month period. There was much better availability on the LAN flight, and this is what I ended up booking on the SYD - SCL leg. Returning SCL-SYD availability on LAN wasn't too bad, however I didn't want to stop in AKL on the return flight, so I grabbed the only PE award seat I could see on QF and put in an upgrade request (it was an ASA so could do this). Fortunately the upgrade came through.

Almost equally obscure is the availability of D class, which is needed for the OneWorld (purchased with $$) round the world fares.

I would really like to understand the code sharing agreement that LA and QF have in place, since on many days the QF code share on the LA flight has better fare options than LA native. And, of course, LA may have better fare classes on the QF plane.

Happy wandering

Fred
