Avoiding sign up $89.50 fee for QFF

just wondering, have some friends who want to join the AFF program, but they are not really frequent flyers, and the $89.50 join fee is a tad harsh. Is there any current way to get around this / promotions??

It redirects to above but qantas.com/freejoin has been around for years. It's really easy to remember and just gets updated with whatever the latest promo for free membership is
