Queenslanders may have read in the Courier Mail of the the disappearance of Barry, his passenger and Barry's Russian-built Yak-52 warbird on a joy flight yesterday afternoon. Hopes fade of finding Brisbane aviator alive - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Many aviators will have met Barry, possibly as a flight student, an aerobatics competitor, a skydiver or through his many other aerial pursuits. He operated from his flying school for many years at Archerfield

Legend has it that

::he used to fly for Ansett many many years ago..but was asked to leave after a certain training barrell roll of a jet ('70s?)

::he successfully did a forced landing of his Pitts onto a suburban Brisbane street ('80s?)

The times I flew with Barry you could see that he really could do anything in an aircraft..his wasn't a learned skill..he just 'had it'.

Aviation has lost a good one.

Vale Barry Hempell, logged his last hours 31 August 08.
