Airlines celebrated new routes with cake. Then it got competitive

While airports and airlines are focused on profits, service, and safety, it turns out they all secretly want to win a popular industry award for the best cake too.

Yes! It's a thing Have read lots of inaugural route trip reports and there's always a cake or cupcakes to celebrate. The ones in the story are pretty elaborate, and the Qantas one is pretty cool.

Indeed. One particular aviation website even has a "cake of the week" and "cake of the year" prize highlighting the fancy cakes made to celebrate new route launches.
