Availability of upgrading to J with points - same pool as the reward seats?

I want to upgrade a flexi to business from LA to BNE with points. I understood, possibly incorrectly, that as long as there were seats this was possible. But the call centre says no availability. Are the points upgrades limited to a specific fare class or the same pool as the reward seats (which I suspect is the case)?

It is normally the same class as reward seats.

I assume you are a gold or platinum member with VA?

Platinum. There are no more reward seats so that explains that. I had a taste for business last week and now I am hooked!

keep your eye on the flight as sometimes seats can be released closer to the date and you can get lucky
