Australian tourist fatally stabbed in Thailand

Terrible terrible news. Condolences to the family.

A message to always be careful and cautious when travelling. Even then bad things can happen.

Sad indeed.

However, contrary to natural thinking, the advice is to "give it up" if challenged. That likely would have saved her.

Hopefully the Thai authorities find the culprits. I suspect a very long stay in a Thai jail (bribes may not help much for someone destroying the Thailand tourist image) is on the cards.

But all that said, I could be stabbed walking down the street today in Australia, I could be hit and killed by a cement truck crossing the road. There is sensibility and there is stupidity. Visiting Thailand isn't stupid.

Very sad to read this, and horrible for her family and the colleagues that were there
Condolences

That is a bunch of travel agents that won't be recommending trips to coughet to their travelers. Very sad to read this.

Sad news to be sure.

I'm in Thailand at Christmas. Where exactly was she? I'll avoid that area..

Then again we are planning to hang mostly at the resort anyway.

Sad news indeed but there is something that is not quite right here.

The men were noticed previously and had gone past a couple of times? What other alert was required? Why were they still walking on the street to allow the men to have access to a possible stabbing or even bagsnatch?

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but this sort of thing is quite common in touristy areas frequented by westerners but one hardly ever hears of stabbings. It happens to Thais as well. Do not give someone the opportunity.

It happened to the Thai lady who runs the Golf Society I frequent in Pattaya. They snathed off her person expensive necklaces. A necklace is all the jewellery I take to Thailand and that is usually hidden under the shirt. Never have it visible.

Some simple advice and I am sure you could think of more

- Don't get drunk
- Don't offend locals
- Don't be a smart cough
- Don't flaunt your money
- Don't have jewellery and valuable possessions visible (in fact I would recommend no jewellery at all)
- Don't walk out at night in remote, dark, places (I would avoid staying in these as well)
