On security guards.

Australian Border Force have confirmed that security guards working at Sydney’s Villawood Immigration Detention Centre are self-isolating after attending a party at the Crossroads Hotel in Casula.

The ABF refused to say how many staff from the detention centre were currently in isolation, but confirmed security guards who had recently been to the pub were following advice from NSW Health and were all currently self-quarantining.

The Refugee Action Coalition claimed as many as 30 guards are self-isolating after attending a Serco manager’s party at the Crossroads Hotel on the weekend of July 4.

The pub is the site of a coronavirus outbreak. NSW Health has told anyone who visited it between July 3 and July 10 to immediately self-isolate for 14 days and be tested for Covid-19.

Three detainees in Villawood told Guardian Australia on Monday evening that they had not been told anything about the staff’s attendance at the venue. However, they said that some guards and other staff had been wearing masks and gloves since Sunday, which they had not previously seen.
At the end of March there were over 400 people held in detention at Villawood.

Who in Sydney DIDN'T go to this pub!!??

Wow, the virus literally could not have picked a better pub to hit up for a drink with the intent to spray across NSW and potentially beyond :(

Also just on the CH10 news was Sutton stating that most of the cases in the second spike can be linked back to the security guards.

Plus there are currently 35 aged care facilities in Victoria now with links to positive cases. This is of major concern. We can only hope that it is mainly staff rather than residents.

So these arent the people manning the quarantine hotels but a gathering of security guards who manage a different facility? Which in itself isnt against Covid regulations as long as social distancing is in place?

It was more what they were not wearing at work till recently.

Yes apparently everyone went there. ABF, Army, politicians..... plus evidently few records being kept of who went to the hotel.

The villawood detenion centre isnt used for quarantining overseas arrivals so would have been no requirment to wear masks or gloved unless they knew they had positive inmates. I havent heard any news reports of illegal international arrivals since the borders closed, so assume the inmates are mostly those who have been here for a while and overstayed their tourist visa etc.

Grounds to close the pub down for not complying with health orders - or at least a huge fine.

On my lunchtime walk to gte a coffee today, witnessed 3 kids ages approx 13 or 14 get off the bus with giant green "sit here" stickers stuck on their shirts, they clearly though it was funny to remove the stickers off the bus seats. Given how many people may have sat on those stickers, high chance they have brought some covid-19 home.

So if there are no barriers to transmission what would happen if a guard caught the virus outside and then went to work?

I hope all the detainees are in spacious conditions well separated from each other and the guards then. If not then it is a high risk situation if you have a big group of adults who are mixing throughout the day and are there for many days, if not months, on end.

The detainees are very reliant on the guards not transmitting anything to them.

I wonder what is done at all of our prisons, as well as other detention centres, as well at the moment?

I would certainly hope all the ones in Vic at present are wearing PPE given that the virus is out and about.

I think they have been asking for release for some time on basis of COVID risk even if their status (refugee or whatever) is not accepted

Read off abc that THE star casino got a fine for serving alcohol to unseat people on Sat night.....$5000

Im interested why the Star fine was less than the one applied to the double bay pub? Unfortunately $5k is nothing to a casino, but if they hand our more to other venues breaching rules, then might force them to enformce the rules, as few small businesses can afford to be fined.

Personally im much more worried to hear that workers in aged care facilities in Melbourne hadnt been wearing masks and gloves, when so close to the most vulnerable. The detnetion facility is basically a prison, so dont think inmates are able to socialsie willy nilly, they would be in their rooms most of the day, and therefore would expect the guards would be able to easily keep their distance, unlike aged care workers who need to touch residents to treat them.

You'd have to close pretty much every restaurant in that case...

All resturants I have dined in since they reopened have been taking details, have 2 meters between tables, hand sanitizer etc. I personally wouldnt dine at a venue that was clearly breaching the rules.

Why would they be required to wear PPR? They arent dealing with potentially infectious people.

That is no different to any other occupation that requires human contact. Would you expect staff in Nursing Homes to be all kitted up if there were no reports of any infections?

See my earlier reply to another above as well.

But just quickly, they are are dealing with potentially infectious people as they are out and about with the general public, and then go to work.

So as long as they never get infected all good, but if they do they are then in contact with a population in crowded conditions, who mix and are there continually.

Would I be comfortable be a detainee in such circumstances? = No.

As mentioned above, I wonder what happens in all of our prisons?

The detainees/prisoners might not infect the guards, but the guards could well infect the detainees/prisoners.

And I'll say again - that situation is no different to any hospital worker, child care worker, nursing home worker, teacher, etc etc that mixes socially after work having had quite intimate in some cases, contact with their clients, then returning to work the next day.

Coronavirus Australia: Narellan Town Centre shopper tests positive for COVID-19

Shoppers who visited the Narellan Town Centre shopping centre on July 6 have been warned to monitor their health after a fellow shopper was later revealed to be infected with coronavirus.

NSW Chief Health Minister Kerry Chant said the warning was in place for those who had visited the southwest Sydney mall’s Kmart, Target, Best and Less and H&M branches as well as the centre’s food court.
