Australian (Open) Tennis and COVID-19

Yesterday at 12 noon tickets went on sale for the Adelaide International, a WTA event starting after the Aus Open on 22 February. Then the govt closed the border with Vic.

I can't find any info about what is going to happen with the tennis event. Will the players get quarantine exemptions? Will the event be cancelled? Glad I didn't buy any tickets!

Has anyone told Marshall? 🤭😂It's already too late then!

I suspect it will blow over, the containment rings, rapid response units and contact tracers will do their work, like they have the last 4-5 times and the 3 SA amigos can take a valium each and figure out a way to make it happen. In a way I’m not sure the SA government deserves it anymore but we will see!

Hopefully they do (selfishly) because we have lots of people attending it!
They can't. Because we require 14 day then 28 days for full open borders.

This is why the Fringe is at risk. Never even considered buying a ticket.

Yes I haven't bought any fringe or festival tix either. I did however have a booking to go to MEL mid March for 1 night. Guess that's not going to be happening 😢 It would have been my first flight in 14 months.

Last week I booked flights and accommodation for a wedding in Sydney in April. Who knows? Maybe we will have to leave the wedding part way through to get back in 6 hours.

Qld re-wrote their border clock rules and gave sports exemptions, so it’s possible SA may decide the start re-writing rules.
That won't fly now I don't think. We are a pretty compliant bunch but that is going to push people. We also have the Fringe, at the same time. Both will involve significant exemptions if they proceed.

Nope, SA will just back down, like QLD and like WA is going to do. The population is over this now. At the very least they will grant exemptions.

So far at the Aus Open, in the men's singles I like the form shown by Tsitsipas, Thiem and Medvedev. I was surprised to see that only in round 2 Djokovic already got a set taken off him by Tiafoe and another set taken to a tiebreak. Nadal too did not win as easily in round 1 as I would have expected - hopefully he'll be more convincing tonight in round 2 against a qualifier.

As to Kyrgios, getting taken to 5 sets in round 2 by a 20-something seed doesn't bode well for how he will go in later rounds against higher ranked players.

In the women's singles Serena is looking strong, Halep less so but I'm not writing her off quite yet.

It's hard to see how some of the shows can go ahead. I think I'll be booking mine on the day

I think it’s Thiem v Kyrgios, so if you think Thiem is going well now, then Kyrgios has his work cut out.

Has anyone heard anything about what will happen with the AO now? 5 day hiatus at least, I presume.

it will happen without crowds as they claim to be in a bubble
