Hi, I know some flyers routinely lounge hop when abroad, but anyone had issues when doing that in Australia? I ask because both the QF and EK lounges scan your boarding pass and I wonder if their system is linked somehow? My understanding is that the lounges are managed by a separate company and QF pays for each visit, so they'll basically be paying twice for that one flight?

We have done exactly this in Melbourne. Started in QF lounge then over to EK closer to departure. Easy.

Also at MEL I once did CX, EK, MH and QF.

Unless you have OWE status my advice is go just to EK. CX and QF are in the down stairs area, I don't think MH still has a lounge in MEL but may be wrong. I do not often venture to the downstairs.

If you can access QF F +1 for @Pushka advice. I also do this with regularity. QF F lounge is in my opinion the pick of the bunch but can get busy, however EK can seem quieter as there are 3 sides of seating whereas QF is along 1.

SYD I stay with QF F, BNE will use either QF or EK as they are to far apart to hop, in ADL no choice and the reason I prefer not to fly international out of ADL.

Planning a lounge hop soon. Travelling EK out of BNE, so will head to the EK lounge via the QP.

I don’t get why one would (lounge hop)
Sometimes it just ends up that way. Have initially gone into a lounge and for one reason or another we haven’t liked it so have moved on to the next. I always like to check out lounges I haven’t been to before aswell so I’ll pop my head in and look around

You can, but in most Australian airports, there aren't multiple lounges that you would have access to on a given trip that you would want to consider hopping. eg, if you have access to the F lounge at SYD or MEL, there is little reason to bother with the J lounge.

The QF lounges are owned by Qantas and are operated by another company that Qantas contracts. There are Qantas staff at the desk while the staff in the lounge work for the contracted company. Qantas doesn't pay per use for those lounges. Qantas gets paid by other lounge users (eg, CX pays QF for their pax using the SYD lounges).

Have done it both in SYD and MEL flying EK Au - NZ with a QF code up to last year.
Never had a query.
I would avoid the MEL QFi J lounge downstairs.
You can try the EK lounge, and the QF F lounges if you have access to the QF F lounge that is.
You can also pay to enter the Marhaba just to mark it off your bucket list.
Neither of the SYD/MEL QF and EK lounges are next to each other though.

I don't bother lounge hopping in SYD or MEL as I head straight to F lounge.

In BNE I may visit the QF lounge before heading over to EK lounge if I have an EK flight. Have a QF mid morning departure next month and not sure I'd bother visiting the EK lounge.

Back in the day when Priority Pass gave access to Virgin Australia lounges I used to head to the VA lounge in ADL to get a barista coffee or two before going to the QP. This was before QF had baristas in its lounges.

International departures from Australia now I just can't be bothered. Head to the F lounge, have lunch or dinner, find a quiet spot and relax with a glass of something.

If QF SG , this can be useful when taking QF 37 out of MEL to SIN, head to QF J lounge, then when EK lounge opens for the later EK 405 flight, head up there. I don’t do this as I get to the airport late enough such that EK lounge is already open and go straight there, no need to go to QF J lounge.

Allowed??

Qantas positively encourage it with that decrepit bunker they call the International J Lounge at MEL. SYD International J is hardly any better.

BD

I've lounge hopped in MEL, NRT, HKG, SIN, LHR, ORD, MIA, DFW, JFK and LAX. Never had any issues.

In general I agree with you. However there are some exceptions for me.

eg: CX in HKG... Wing F for shower/Cabana(hopefully!) then Pier F for dinner/bar (and also depends on gate of departure). Sure one could stay in Wing F, but it's not nearly as nice or good for food(imho) as Pier... and Pier F doesn't have the awesome Cabanas... so a hop.
eg: at LAX with a longer layover connecting to a domestic flight on AA or UA it makes much more sense to use the QF or NZ(alliance depending) lounge in TBIT then walking over to the domestic terminals and perhaps popping into a lounge there (forexample, AA mini lounge at the Eagles Nest) prior to a flight. Facilities far better obviously in the international lounges.
eg: AKL EK lounge is wonderful but gets super busy and full (or did before they pulled the trans tasman tags!) and I would often start in EK then move to the QF lounge for quit (and the ice cream)

so there are reasons one might want to "hop" for various reasons based on convenience and/or amenity.

IMHO

I've done hops like SIN EK because QF wasn't open yet, then move over to QF/BA once they opened, or ORD main Admirals club for a shower (old F lounge didn't have showers), then over to the Flagship lounge, then saw that my flight would board soon and would be boarding by the time I got to that concourse only to find that the flight had been hit by a delay while I was heading to the gate, so I went into the secondary Admirals club that was near the gate.
