"A Sydney man is paying $123,000 to be the first person to buy a seat on the first commercial flight of the world's largest airliner, the Airbus A380.

The first class ticket, one-way from Singapore to Sydney, with Singapore Airlines, was sold at a charity auction that continues to fill the remaining 520 or so seats on the October 24 flight.


The successful bidder, Julian Hayward, said the flight was up there with the maiden commercial voyages of the 747 and Concorde."

Makes me think of how many 'real' ATW tickets I could get in 'J' or 'F' :!:

To me this is almost incomprehensible. Maybe I'm just getting old when more a/c types that I've flown or flown in are in museums around the place than those I currently am ever likely to fly or fly in in the future.

I don't really agree with Mr Hayward. The 707 and DC8 made the world much smaller and this was very significant. The 747 really opened up the skies to bulk travel and bulk freight.

Concorde was a spectacular novelty but a commercial/environmental failure.

I don't actually think that the A380 will change travel in any significant way. A bit bigger and PERHAPS a little more comfortable, but that's about it.

Although it is not a quantum shift in the technology it is a dramatic new period of travel. The double decker super jumbo is just so different to what has gone before - although I am hoping thi is more concorde than titanic...
