Aussie bar mat mum Annice Smoel denied US visa

I think the point here, if in fact there is one (which is dubious in the extreme), is that you can be denied a US visa on the most trivial of grounds, whilst thousands upon thousands of crime lords, drug barons, murderers, lawyers, and the like are welcomed with open arms to the LOTFAP.

Sort of like how searching everyone shoes for bombs keeps the skies safe.

Can anyone explain to me why this woman and her family are a threat to US national security?

No country is required to issue a visa to anyone and they are under no requirement to explain what their reasonings are. The USA has a process to determine whether to allow admission to the country and she failed to meet the requirements. If she was a citizen of another country attempting to enter Australia as a tourist , she may have been ineligable for admission due to the recent conviction

The USA has a standard that they apply and this time she is ineligable. c'est la vie and is , it would seem, her own stupid fault for her actions in Thailand and her interaction with the police Service there

Quite correct. I also think that as most of us here are traveling on AU passports we don't feel it, But Australia is rather tough to get into just like the US. I have had friends denied tourist visas for Australia for various (non criminal) reasons.

Not surprised at all and I hope she gets no assistance whatsoever from the Australian government in this matter.

Why should she be allowed into the USA? Because she has kids? There are many mothers much better than her who cannot afford to take the kids on holidays. She should have thought about her "dream family trip" before getting drunk in Thailand then getting herself into trouble and making it worse by running away from the police....

It would be better if she did not travel so as to reduce the number of "embarrassing Australians" overseas. Those people give Australia a bad name.

Wow some seriously tenuous lines of connection being drawn there - I would almost accuse you of troll-like behaviour - just post rubbish to get a rise out of people (a bit like your "most ridiculous post ever" comment in the express queue thread).

There isnt much point responding to your specific comments as you just seem to "dump and go" rather than entering a debate...

Just as an example of how ridiculous the US standards are - my colleagues travelling to visit me FROM the US require a formal written letter of invitation to get their visa - conversely travelling TO the US does not require one - so which country has the more stringent standards?
