I'm planning a trip ADL - SYD - PEK return with QF and want to maximise my SCs. So I have picked out some dates for costings for two people and have us departing ADL on 18/07 and departing PEK 30/07. The cheapest fare I can find from the QF website is $3528 in discount Y (earning me 100SCs). I decided to look at the most expensive Y fare on offer which QF display as FlexSaver so I assumed that this would be booked as Y and hence should gain me 200SCs for the return trip ($4885).

However, when I did some further checking I found that under the FlexSaver category -

Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Flight Upgrade Awards are eligible on this fare.
  • Flight Upgrade Awards can only be redeemed on Qantas operated flights.
  • Classed as Discount Economy for Status Credit Earn.
So given the information that I have at hand, I am confused. Can some please explain?

Therefore, can someone quote me a QF airfare around these dates that will be the cheapest for me to earn maximum Y SCs? And then tell me how I can book it?

Many thanks in advance!

Qantas rarely offers full Y tickets on their website.

The cheapest Full Y ticket that I can see (via Expertflyer) is $2204 +++ / person. Fare basis YKFFA1

Have a look at some of the online booking sites (eg Expedia or *cough* Zuji or webjet and see if they can price up your ticket in the fare basis above. Or give Fright Centre (or your favourite travel agency) a call and see what they can do.

How much does a circle asia fare in whY cost - might be an option.

I had a look at LAS fares the other day for my upcoming trip to PVG and PEK.

They work out much the same as the YKFFA1 fare Mal listed. The downside to the LAS fare is the discount Y SC earning (L class).

Note that for me in MEL, with the YKFFA1 fare I could route MEL-SYD-HKG-PEK-HKG-SYD-MEL, so that is 20+60+40 x 2 SC for the return trip. Without checking EF, I am not sure what routings are possible from ADL, but would ssume something similar.

If not, chuck on ADL-MEL-ADL red e-deal to the above for about $2500 for 260 SC.

Note that international flexisavers are classified as discount Y for SC earning (and points UG's).

I was going to try and book directly with QF.

Tried to price it up via Expedia and Webjet, neither are playing the game properly - probably because of the large number of fare basis available.

I can get it to price properly via Zuji (HK) for $HK18602 (Approx $2,627 inc tax/surcharges), although it's showing a stopover in Syd overnight.

Perhaps Fright Centre et.al or Qantas direct.

None of the circle asia fares are booked into Y class.

You'll find it's difficult to find a reasonable full Y fare with Qantas internationally, as i've had the request many times over the years as an agent but its never been worth it for the few extra status credits you'll get.

It looks like full Y ADL-PEK is $2610 pls tax, which isnt too bad actually for QF Y.

Here's what EF says:

ADL-SYD/MEL-SHA(CA/FM/MU)BJS
ADL-SYD/MEL-BJS
ADL-SYD/MEL-HKG(CA/CZ/KA/CX)BJS

So lots of options there for additional SC's - however if Flying Fox is travelling with their partner, the partner may not want to take the long way around :)

Cheapest discount economy return flights for 1 person according to Cheap flights, accommodation, holiday packages, hire cars - travel.com.au for these dates are: $1316 with SQ, $1762 with QF, $1542 with CX (may need to vary dates slightly for availability), $1718 with MH etc + their booking fee which ranges from $14.95 to $33. SQ's fare for 2 is >$800 cheaper than the next...I know what I'll do if I was paying out of my own pocket;)

Is that one-way? If so, the DAS13 fare for A$4649 is pretty attractive. Its certainly good value against QF's YRT fare of $5855.

I just booked a YKFFA1 fare MEL-PVG,SHA-PEK-HKG-MEL via QF

The fare rules indicate that SHA-BJS is permitted on CA/FM/MU. Unfortunately no OW carriers flying between SHA and BJS so no points or SC for this segment.

Originally wanted to fly CA out of PVG, but this fare actually books into CA L class, not Y, so no availability on the date that I wanted.

So now flying out of Hongqiao on MU.

Didn't get off to a good start with QF as they wanted to book a separate fare sha-pek until I asked them to check the fare rules again.

$50 booking fee + $18 cc fee

Thanks all for your assistance.

Looks like I'll be talking to my Travel Agent about this one!

Cheers!
