Ask The Pilot

Is the 'goodbye' a policy thing or a personal preference? Which camp to you fall in to?

I always try to do it. On the 380 that ends up with me saying 'bye to the economy class passengers.

Just trying to work this out - do any whY pax actually walk through F to disembark? I would have expected F to rush off the A/C and whY to disembark through the door at the back of F. J pax would leave through their own doors...

Or do you walk through F to say cheerio to the whY pax in their alternate daw ;)

They don't walk through F...I do.

From the time I turn off the seat belt sign, there is a least 5 minutes worth of work to be done. Checklist. Shutting applications down, and putting things away. By the time I can leave the coughpit, first are almost always gone and business mostly so. Economy is normally just starting at that point, so I say goodbye to them.

FWIW, at LHR we (Y scum ;)) disembarked through the F cabin. Nice surprise to see it.

That's nice _ might make an effort to way to get off in SIN in a couple of weeks ;)

Dedicated cameras are allowed.

This is news to me? We're allowed to use a video camera even though we've been told to turn off all electronic devices? Surely the (admittedly negligible) risk of something bad happening is the same between a camcorder and a walkman?

They have been allowed for a while.

I believe the issue is the fact of the audio distraction the walkman, ipod etc provides during an emergency (i.e not hearing crew instructions). The provided IFE negates this by having the crew instructions (over the PA system) override what ever is on the IFE at the time.

What about ebook readers? I was instructed to turn mine off and to put it away as we commenced our descent into SYD. Then that was aborted and we were put into a holding pattern for nearly an hour. It was then that I discovered that I must have ADD because I soon become somewhat bored.

The other thing though, is that if something did happen it wouldn't be nice to have 500g (roughly 1 lb) articles flying about the cabin....

Some of them have 3G and wi-fi. Kindle, for example, uses Vodafone.

Hey JB, I had a recent flight on AF with a female captain. Are there many female captains in the QF ranks?

As a percentage, there aren't that many girls in the pilot ranks. The numbers don't seem to have changed over the years, so I guess there aren't that many who find it an attractive career.

I don't know how many female captains there are, but there are some on all of the aircraft types except the A380 (I'm not sure about the 330). At least a few of the girls have seniority for an A380 command, but they've not taken up the slots.

You of course may not know , but what restrcitions are placed on Female pilots working whilst pregnant?

Off the top of my head (last looked a couple of years ago for mrsdoc ;)), pax are allowed domestically to ~34 weeks and international until ~28 weeks. Letter from obstetrician required for travel after 28 weeks I believe.

Do you think you'd get in trouble for calling them girls, not ladies, JB?

I'd have thought that monniker was safer if it were reserved for the aircraft... ;)

Not something I'm any sort of expert on....but, I don't think they fly at all.
